He is most noted for an autobiographical book Life in The Confederate Army that he wrote after the war chronicling his army life. WilliamWatson was born in 1826 in the Scottish village of Skelmorlie , some twenty five miles west of Glasgow on the Firth of Clyde . His father, a landscape gardener named HenryWatson, had been born in England . He had come to Skelmorlie in 1820 to lay out the grounds of Ashcraig, the estate of Andrew D. Campbell. Watson immigrated about 1845 to the Caribbean Islands, where he worked as a civil engineer and occasional captain of sailing vessels. Goodwin edited the Panegyricus of Isocrates 1864 and Demosthenes On The Crown 1901 and assisted in preparing the seventh edition of Henry George Liddell Liddell and Robert Scott philologist Scott s A Greek English Lexicon Greek English Lexicon . He revised an English version by several writers of Plutarch s Morals 5 vols, 1871 6th ed., 1889 , and published the Greek text with literal English version of Aeschylus Agamemnon 1906 for the Harvard production of that play in June 1906. As a teacher he did much to raise the tone of classical reading from that of a mechanical exercise to literary study. But his most important work was his Syntax of the Moods and Tenses of the Greek Verb 1860 , of which the seventh revised edition appeared in 1877 and another enlarged in 1890. Professor William J. Watson 1865 1948 was a toponymist , one of the greatest Scotland Scottish scholars of the 20th century, and was the first scholar to place the study of Scottish place names on a firm linguistic basis. Watson was a native Scottish Gaelic language Gaelic speaker, born in Milntown of New Tarbat now known as Milton, Easter Ross Milton , Easter Ross . He was the son of Hugh Watson, a blacksmith . He received his initial education from his uncle, James Watson. William became well grounded in Gaelic studies and in the Classics . William went to the University of Aberdeen and the University of Oxford . First a school teacher in Glasgow , Inverness and then Royal High School, Edinburgh Edinburgh , it was while teaching in Inverness that be began to contribute to the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness and the Celtic Review . He married Ella Carmichael daughter of Alexander Carmichael . He took the chair of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh in 1914, despite holding no prior university position. He remained in this prestigious position until making way for his son James Carmichael Watson in 1938. William died aged 83 on March 9, 1948 He is best known for his The Celtic Place names of Scotland 1926 , based on 30 years of work.
