    Henry Morton 11 December 1836 New York &ndash 9 May 1902 New York was a United States scientist, the first president of the Stevens Institute of Technology . Biography He was the son of Henry Jackson Morton 1807 1890 , a clergyman who was rector of St. James s church in Philadelphia for many years and a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania . Henry Morton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1857, and became professor of physics and chemistry at the Episcopal Academy of Philadelphia in 1860. In 1863, he delivered a series of lectures on chemistry at the Franklin Institute . A year later, he was appointed resident secretary at Franklin Institute , where he continued his lectures. His lectures on light attracted attention throughout the United States and Europe by reason of his brilliant and unique experiments. He continued as resident secretary until 1870. When the first ever U.S. championship match took place in 1845, Stanley defeated Eug ne Rousseau chess Eug ne Rousseau of New Orleans and thus claimed the title. Stanley was an England Englishman who emigrated from London to New York in 1845 per USA Federal Census of 1900, to work in the British Consulate, and his English ideas had a great influence on American chess. One of his ideas was to have a regular newspaper column devoted to chess, which he started in 1845 in The Spirit of the Times . He also started the American Chess Magazine in 1846, but others copied the idea which originated in England , and competition forced the magazine out of business. In 1855 he organized the first World Problem Tournament. In 1846 he published the first US book on a chess match, 31 Games of Chess . Stanley is a little known figure who has been eclipsed by the achievements of the world famous Paul Morphy .
