Personal history and career Image Colonne de la liberte Quebec .png thumb left 120px Illustration of the Assembly of the Six Counties , drawn for The Montreal Star . Born in Qu bec City , he moved with his family to Montreal in 1869, where he apprenticed for an engraving firm. Commissioner George Arthur French of the North West Mounted Police appreciated the value of good public relations. He knew the Canadian public was interested in the new police force and thought that providing a visual record of the force would help maintain that interest. Since in 1873 photographs could not be reproduced in newspapers, French wrote to the manager of the Canadian Illustrated News inviting them to send an artist journalist to accompany the expedition. The idea appealed to the newspaper as they would get an exclusive set of articles and pictures to publish. The young artist was immediately sent on his way. Nevertheless, Julien s western experience gave him ... of his best known of his works and of the Patriote iconography today. Julien Benda December 26, 1867 Paris &ndash June 7, 1956 was a France French philosophy philosopher and novel ist. He remains famous for his essay The Betrayal of the Intellectuals . Life Born into a Jew ish family, Benda became a master of French belles lettres . Yet he believed that science was superior to literature as a method of inquiry. He disagreed with Henri Bergson , the leading light of French philosophy of his day. Benda is now mostly remembered for his short 1927 book La Trahison des Clercs , a work of some notoriety in its day. The title of the English translation was The Betrayal of the Intellectuals , although The Treason of the Learned would have been more accurate. This polemical essay argued that French and German intellectual s in the 19th and 20th century had often lost the ability to reason dispassionately about political and military matters, instead becoming apologists for crass nationalism, warmongering and racism. Benda reserved his harshest criticisms for his fellow Frenchmen Charles Maurras and Maurice Barr s . Benda defended the measured and dispassionate outlook of classical civilization , and the internationalism of traditional Christianity , which he understood well. Other works by Benda include Belph gor 1918 , Uriel s Report 1926 , and Exercises of a Man Buried Alive 1947 , an attack on the contemporary French celebrities of his time. Julien Havet Pierre Eug ne April 4, 1853 1893 , France French historian , was born at Vitry sur Seine , the second son of Ernest Havet . He early showed a remarkable aptitude for learning, but had a pronounced aversion for pure rhetoric . His studies at the cole Nationale des Chartes cole des chartes where he took first place both upon entering and leaving and at the cole pratique des hautes tudes cole des Hautes tudes did much to develop his critical faculty, and the historical method taught and practiced at these establishments brought home to him the dignity of history, which thenceforth became his ruling passion. Havet s valedictory thesis at the cole des Chartes, S rie chronologique des gardiens et seigneurs des les normandes 1876 , was a definitive work, slightly affected by later research. In 1878 he followed his thesis with a study called Les Cours royales dans les les normandes . Both works were composed entirely from the original documents at the Public Record Office in London and the archives of Jersey and Guernsey . On the history of Merovingian institutions, Havet s conclusions were widely accepted see La Formule N. rex Francor . Posthumously, his published and unpublished writings were collected and, with the exception of Les Cours royales des les normandes and Lettres de Gerbert , were published in two volumes called Questions m rovingiennes and Opuscules in dits 1896 , containing important papers on diplomatics and on Carolingian and Merovingian history, as well as a large number of short monograph s covering a variety of subjects.
