    William Theodore de Bary born 1919 is an East Asian studies expert at Columbia University , with the title John Mitchell Mason Professor of the University and Provost Emeritus. de Bary graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University in 1941, where he was a student in the first iteration of Columbia s famed Literature Humanities course. He then briefly took up graduate studies at Harvard before the US entered the Second World War . de Bary left the academy to serve in American military intelligence in the Pacific Theater of Operations Pacific Theatre . Upon his return, he resumed his studies at Columbia, where he earned his PhD . He has edited numerous books of original source material relating to East Asian primarily Japanese and Chinese literature, history, and culture, as well as making the case, in his book Nobility and Civility , for the universality of Asian values. He is recognized as essentially creating the field of Neo Confucian studies. Additionally, de Bary was active in faculty intervention during the Columbia University protests of 1968 and served as the university s Provost education provost from 1971 to 1978. He has attempted to reshape the Core Curriculum Columbia College Core Curriculum of Columbia College to include Great Books classes devoted to non Western civilizations. de Bary is additionally famous for rarely missing a Columbia Lions football game since he began teaching at the university in 1953. In 1794 he went to Berlin, where he was engaged in Portrait miniature miniature painting and as a teacher of drawing. In 1802 he visited Paris, and the study of the galleries there first induced him to attempt painting in oil. From 1811 until his death he was a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts Berlin Academy , and professor at the same from 1814 onwards. He died at Potsdam in 1850. One of his most famous pictures is The Descent from the Cross, the altarpiece altar piece at the Garrison Church Potsdam Garrison Church in Potsdam. He was born in Prague in July 1825 and studied philosophy and history in the university of his native city, where he earned a Ph.D. . Taking an interest in art, he made several educational journeys, travelling to Munich , Dresden and Berlin , and spent some months in Italy . After his Ph.D. he addressed himself to art history. He wrote a second Ph.D. thesis on Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel Hegel s theory of history in T bingen , where he also was involved in the political activities of the Revolution of 1848 . Work He settled at T bingen , but in 1848 returned to Prague and began to lecture at his own university on the history of the revolutionary epoch. The Liberalism liberal tone of these lectures brought him into disfavour with the ruling authorities, and in 1849 he left Bohemia and passed some time in England , France and the Netherlands . In 1852 he settled at Bonn , where he was lecturer and professor from 1860 for art history. He studied medicine in Leiden under Hermann Boerhaave , and in 1754 went to the University of Vienna , where he became head of its medical clinic. He is remembered for teaching students at the bedside of patients. At Vienna , Anton de Haen was an associate to Gerard van Swieten , whom he worked with in the establishment of structured medical classes. He was an advocate of autopsy post mortem investigations, as well as maintaining detailed case histories of patients. He was one of the first physicians to make routine use of the thermometer in medicine, and perceived that temperature was a valuable indication of illness and health. Among his written works was Ratio medendi in nosocomio practico , of which 18th century Viennese hospital practices and case histories are discussed. This treatise also described one the earliest known cases of amenorrhea associated with a pituitary tumor . His date and place of birth are uncertain sources differ on whether he was born in Portugal in 1673 1674, or less likely in Amsterdam c. 1682. His mother was a Christian but his father was a Jew who moved with his family from Portugal to the Low Countries . During the Grand Embassy of Peter I of Russia Peter the Great to Europe 1697 , the tsar was allowed by the Dutch sailors to command a ship, where Vieira served as a cabin boy. He was taken by the tsar to Russia in the capacity of his page and orderly, gradually rising to the rank of adjutant general in 1718. That same year, he fell in love with Prince Menshikov s sister and seduced her. They were apprehended by her brother, who ordered Vieira to be beaten to death. The latter, however, appealed to the tsar for mercy, and Peter ordered Vieira to be liberated and married to Menshikov s sister the very next day.
