  1. Hatpin

File Tiara de Lalique Calouste Gulbenkian.jpg thumb Hatpin A hatpin is a decorative pin for holding a hat to the head, usually by the hair. In Western culture , a hatpin is almost solely a female item and is often worn in a pair. They are typically around 20cm in length, with the pinhead being the most decorated part. The hatpin was invented to hold wimple s and veil s in place, and was hand made. In United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Britain , demand eventually outgrew the number that could be supplied by hand making, and they began to be imported from France . In 1832, an U.S. American machine was invented to manufacture the pins, and they became much more affordable. During the 1880s, bonnets gave way to hats and the popularity of hatpins soared. They remained a standard womens accessory through the 1910s and were produced in a vast range of materials and types. Hatpin holder boxes were also produced. Laws were passed in 1908 in America which limited the length of hatpins, as there was a concern they might be used by suffragettes as weapons. Also by the 1910s, ordnances were passed requiring hatpin tips to be covered so as not to injury people accidentally. Various covers were made, but poorer women often had to make do with ersatz items like potato pieces and cork. Hatpins are also collectible items, and there is an American Hatpin Society for collectors in the U.S. and The Hat Pin Society of Great Britain for collectors in the United Kingdoms. www.hatpinsociety.org.uk References commons inline Category Hatpins Encyclop dia Britannica http www.britannica.com eb article 9039508 Accessed August 16, 2005. 1. Hairpin (fashion)

Image Hair pins old.jpg thumb 300px right Hairpins around 600 b.c. Image Bobby pin.jpg right thumb 300px A bobby pin , a type of hairpin A hair pin or hairpin is a long device used to hold a person s hair in place. Hairpins made of metal , ivory , bronze , carved wood , etc. were used in ancient history ancient Assyria and Egypt for securing decorated hairstyle s. Such hairpins suggest, as graves show, that many were luxury objects among the Egyptians and later the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans. Major success came in 1901 with the invention of the spiral hairpin by New Zealand inventor Ernest Godward . This was a predecessor of the hair clip. The hairpin may be decorative and encrusted with jewels and ornaments, or it may be utiliarian, and designed to be almost invisible while holding a hairstyle in place. Some hairpins are a single straight pin, but modern versions are more likely to be constructed from different lengths of wire that are bent in half with a u shaped end and a few kink s along the two opposite portions. The finished pin may vary from two to six inches in final length. The length of the wires enables placement in several styles of hairdo s to hold the style in place. The kinks enable retaining the pin during normal movements. A boater also straw boater , basher , skimmer , cady , katie , somer , sennit hat , or in Japan, can can hat is a kind of men s formal summer hat . It is normally made of stiff sennit straw and has a stiff flat crown and brim, typically with a solid or striped grosgrain ribbon around the crown. Boaters were popular as casual summer headgear in the late 19th century and early 20th century, especially for boating or sailing, hence the name. Nowadays they are rarely seen except at sailing or rowing events, period theatrical and musical performances e.g. barbershop music or as part of old fashioned school uniform , such as at Harrow School . Since 1952, the straw boater hat has been part of the uniform of the Princeton University Band , notably featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated Magazine in October, 1955. ref http webscript.princeton.edu puband about history History, The Princeton University Band .
