  1. Anisodesmic crystal

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 An anisodesmic crystal sometimes anisodemic crystal is a crystal containing chemical bond bonds with differing electrostatic valencies. All other crystals are known as isodesmic crystal s or isodemic and examples include diamond and halite . These terms are of particular importance when discussing the structural chemistry of mineral s. The electrostatic valency is a measure of the strength of bonds, being the valence charge divided by the coordination number . Linus Pauling s second rule of ionic bonding, the Electrostatic Valence Principle states, An ionic structure will be stable to the extent that the sum of the strengths of the electrostatic bonds that reach an anion equals the charge on that anion. When there is more than one type of bonding in a crystal, strongly anisotropic physical properties can result such as those of graphite . Many other substances have anisotropic physical properties. Such properties are directly related to the atomic structures of the substances. Conversely, halite is an example of an isotropic crystal with equal hardness in all directions. Trapped in a time capsule the same size as the diameter of a human hair, the ore forming liquid in this inclusion was so hot and contained so much dissolved solids that when it cooled, crystals of halite, sylvite, gypsum, and hematite formed. As the samples cooled, the fluid shrank more than the surrounding mineral, and created a vapor bubble. Heating the inclusion to the temperature at which the bubble is reabsorbed and daughter crystals dissolve gives an estimate of the minimum temperature at the moment of ore formation. 1. Continuous sub-grain rotation type dynamic recrystallization

In Metallurgy , Materials Science and Structural geology continuous sub grain rotation type dynamic recrystallization is recognized as an important mechanism for dynamic recrystallisation . It involves the rotation of initially low angle sub grain boundaries until the mismatch between the crystal lattice s across the boundary is sufficient for them to be regarded as grain boundaries . This mechanism has been recognized in many minerals, including quartz , calcite , olivine , pyroxene s, mica s, feldspar s, halite and garnet s, and in metals various magnesium , aluminium and nickel alloys . 1. Salt glacier

Image SaltGlaciers ZagrosMtns 20010810.jpg thumb Salt domes hills and salt glaciers dark areas in the Zagros Mountains of southern Iran . A salt glacier is a flow of salt typically halite that is created when a rising diapir in a salt dome breaches the surface. Gravity causes the salt to flow like glaciers into adjacent valleys. Most of the flow occurs during the winter, when the salt is wet, as the strength of salt is critically dependent on its water content. The resulting tongue shaped bodies can extend for kilometers, with repeating bow shaped ridges separated by crevasse like gullies and with steep sides and fronts. Clays may be brought up with the salt, turning it dark. 1. Hopper crystal

Unreferenced date January 2008 image Bismuth crystal macro.jpg thumb 300px right Synthetic bismuth crystal A hopper crystal is a form of crystal , defined by its Gravity wagon hopper ed shape. The edges of hoppered crystals are fully developed, but the interior spaces are not filled in. This results in what appears to be a hollowed out step lattice mathematics lattice formation, as if someone had removed interior sections of the individual crystals. In fact, the removed sections never filled in, because the crystal was growing so rapidly that there was not enough time or material to fill in the gaps. The interior edges of a hoppered crystal still show the crystal form characteristic to the specific mineral , and so appear to be a series of smaller and smaller stepped down miniature versions of the original crystal. Hoppering occurs when electricity electrical attraction is higher along the edges of the crystal, causing faster growth at edges than near face centers. This attraction draws the mineral molecule s more strongly than the interior sections of the crystal, thus the edges develop more quickly. Hoppering is common in many minerals, including lab grown bismuth , galena , quartz called skeletal or fenster crystals , gold , calcite , halite salt , and water ice . For example, the Earth s mantle geology mantle is believed to undergo convection over long time scales. Since the mantle is known to be solid it supports the propagation of seismic waves shear waves , it must be behaving as a rheid.
