Christian William Anthony Katterfelto known as Gustavus arrived at Hull in September 1776 and traveled around Britain until his death in 1799. He performed in London from 1780 84. The widespread flu epidemic of 1782 made him famous as a quack, when he used a solar microscope to show images of microbes he believed were its cause. These insects provided him with the catchphrase Wonders Wonders Wonders which often headed his advertisements. He went with his brother to Scotland in 1765 and studied at King s College, Aberdeen King s College in Aberdeen . He entered the Middle Temple in London , England , in 1767, and completed his law studies in 1771. He returned to Maryland in the latter year and settled in Somerset County, Maryland Somerset County , where he practiced law. He was a delegate to the Annapolis Convention 1774 1776 Annapolis Convention in 1774 and 1775, and subsequently a member of the Association of the Freemen of Maryland. He was a member of the first state constitutional convention in 1776. He moved to Dorchester County, Maryland , and was member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1780. Scott was elected to the Confederation Congress in 1784, but did not attend. He resumed the practice of law and moved to Montgomery County, Maryland , in 1794. He was one of the commissioners to superintend the History of Washington, D.C. erection of the public buildings in Washington, D.C. , from 1794 to 1800. He died in Washington, D.C., and was buried on his farm in Virginia . His grandson was Congressman William Lawrence Scott . Biography He was educated at the classical school in J nk pings, where his father, a judge of the aulic court for the south of Sweden, resided, and in 1810 he entered the Swedish military navy. In 1815 he settled on the eastern shore of Maryland, where he was engaged as a private tutor. Five years later he went to Richmond, Virginia , studied law, and after being admitted to the bar practised that profession for a number of years. Among the important cases with which he was connected was that of three Spaniards charged with piracy and murder on board the brig Crawford. He was assigned as counsel for them by Chief Justice John Marshall , to whom he had been introduced by his elder brother, Christian. The case created an unusual sensation, owing to the horrible nature of the crime. Subsequently Schmidt published A Brief Sketch of the Occurrences on board the Brig Crawford Richmond, 1827 . In 1829, Schmidt moved to New Orleans, Louisiana , where he met and married Melanie Seghers, daughter of a prominent attorney, and established himself in New Orleans society and the legal profession there.
