He was youngest son of John Gurney d. 1809 of Earlham , Norfolk , and brother of Elizabeth Fry , the philanthropist, Louisa Gurney Hoare , the writer on education, and Joseph John Gurney and Samuel Gurney , all of whom are separately noticed. His mother, Catherine, daughter of Daniel Bell, died in 1792. He descended from the ancient family of Gurney or Gournay, a younger branch of which held certain manors in Norfolk temp. Henry II . Daniel was a direct descendant of this branch of the family. After completing his education Gurney entered the Norwich firm of Gurney & Co. , of which he was afterwards the head, and for more than sixty years a partner. Eric Gurney 1910 1992 was a Canadian American cartoonist and illustrator. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba , he grew up in Toronto , where he began a career as a commercial artist. In 1938 he emigrated to the USA to work with The Walt Disney Company , where he was a story writer and collaborated on several classic Disney films. Turning freelance in 1948, he did cartoon illustrations for magazines and advertising campaigns, notably for the Ethyl Corporation . Gurney is best known for his humorous illustrations in books for children and adults. He illustrated Punctured Poems 1971 by Richard Armour poet Richard Armour How to Live with a Neurotic Dog 1960 text by Stephen Baker How to Live with a Calculating Cat 1962 text by William Nettleton an edition of Sportsmanlike Driving 1965 , a textbook published by the American Automobile Association and many other titles, whose total sales number in the millions. He received the National Cartoonists Society Advertising and Illustration Award for 1961 and 1971 for his work. Oliver Robert Gurney 28 January 1911 ndash 11 January 2001 was an England English Assyriologist and a leading scholar of the Hittites . Early life Gurney was born in London in 1911, the son of Robert Gurney, a zoologist, and a nephew of the archaeologist John Garstang . He was educated at Eton College and New College, Oxford , where he studied classics , graduating in 1933. His uncle John Garstang excited the young Gurney s interest in Hittite studies, then in its infancy, and after a course in Akkadian language Akkadian at Oxford University in 1934 35, he went to the University of Berlin to study Hittite under Hans Ehelolf . During the Second World War he joined the Royal Artillery , and served with the Sudan Defence Force . Academic career On his return to Oxford in 1945, Gurney accepted the post of Reader in Assyriology, a post he held until his retirement in 1978. In 1948, he joined the council of management of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara , founded by his uncle, and maintained his links with the Institute for the rest of his life, serving as President from 1982.
