    Henri Guillaume Galeotti 10 September 1814 1858 was a French Belgian botanist and geologist of Italian parentage who was born in Paris . He specialized in the study of the family Cactaceae . He studied geology and natural history at the Etablissement G ographique de Bruxelles , where he graduated in 1835 with an award winning dissertation on the geology of Brabant province Brabant . After graduation, he spent the next five years in Mexico performing geological and botanical research. Here he collected numerous new species of plants, particularly cacti . In 1840 Galeotti was offered a position teaching botany at the University of Brussels , but turned down the offer, preferring to work at his Plant nursery nursery outside of Brussels , where he imported Mexican flora for sell in Europe. During this time he also collaborated with botanist Martin Martens 1797 1863 , involving scientific study of specimens that were collected in Mexico. In 1853 he became director of the Jardin botanique de Bruxelles Botanical Garden of Brussels . In 1852 he became editor of the Journal d Horticulture Pratique , and in 1857 created the Bulletin de la Soci t Royale d Horticulture de Belgique et du Jardin botanique de Bruxelles . After Galeotti s death in 1858, his personal Mexican herbarium was purchased from his widow by the Jardin botanique de Bruxelles . In August 1838, while in Mexico, he and a group of other botanists explored the slopes of Pico de Orizaba , the tallest mountain in Mexico. The genus Galeottia of the family Orchidaceae is named in his honor. Background Born in Toulouse to a French cabinet maker and a mother of Italian descent, Martin successfully persuaded his father to permit him to become an artist. He began his career in 1877 at the Toulouse School of the Fine Arts , where he was under the tutelage of Jules Garipuy he was also a pupil of Henry Eug ne Delacroix . In 1879, Martin relocated to Paris and with the help of a scholarship, was able to study in Jean Paul Laurens studio. Four years later, he received his first medal at the Paris Salon , where he would hold his first exhibition three years later in 1886. The year after he won his first medal, Martin was awarded a scholarship for a tour in Italy, where he studied the work of veterans such as Giotto and Masaccio . His 1889 canvas submission to the Salon earned him the gold medal for work that has been described as Pointillist . That same year he became a member of the Legion of Honour . At the 1900 World Fair , he was awarded the Grand Prize for his work. During this period, he became friends with Auguste Rodin . He was born in Purworejo, Java island Java , Dutch East Indies , and educated at Utrecht University , taking his doctoral degree in 1936 with a paper on Surinam ese Lauraceae . He spent most of his professional life studying the plants of southeastern Asia , settled at Buitenzorg, later Bogor , Indonesia . At an early stage in his career he also contributed a number of family treatments to August Adriaan Pulle Pulle s Flora of Suriname . Kostermans was especially interested in Lauraceae , Malvales Bombacaceae and Sterculiaceae , and Dipterocarpaceae . In recent years he turned his attention to Asian Anacardiaceae . He was a productive worker and published extensively on these and other groups. The genus Kostermansia Soegeng, of the family Bombacaceae, and the species Cryptocarya kostermansiana C.K. Allen, were named in his honour.
