Alternate spelling include Godfred , G ttrick German , G trik Danish , Gudr d Danish , and Godofredus Latin . Biography King Gudfred appeared in present day Holstein with a navy in 804 AD where diplomacy took place with the Franks . 1. Horik I

Horik I died 854 reigned as sole King of Danes Germanic tribe Denmark from 827 to his violent death in 854. His reign was marked by Danish raids on the Franco German empire of Louis the Pious , son and successor of Charlemagne . Horik s father was King Gudfred , known for his successful raids and wars against Charlemagne s Frankish empire and against the Abodrites . In 810, Godfred was assassinated by one of his retinue, and his nephew and successor King Hemming Hemming made peace with Charlemagne. Hemming did not last long. Horik and another of Gudfred s sons took power in 811, later expelling a rival named Harald Klak , who took refuge at the court of Charlemagne s son and successor, Louis the Pious . In 819, Louis forced Godfred s sons to accept Harald as co ruler. Harald converted to Christianity in 826, with Louis standing as his godfather, but Harald was driven out of Denmark for the second and final time one year later. By then Horik was the only son Godfred s still alive, making him the sole king of the Danes Germanic tribe Danes . Horik refused to convert to Christianity, as it was his enemies religion, and resisted attempts by Archbishop Anskar of Hamburg Bremen to proselytize the Danes. In 845, Horik s army attacked Hamburg and destroyed St. Mary s Cathedral Hamburg St. Mary s Cathedral there. It was Horik s last major war in Germany . However, Danish raids against Frisia continued. The Franks lacked an effective fleet, so the Danes could raid more or less with impunity. The Danes sacked the silver minting center of Dorestad in 834, 835, and 836, and plundered Walcheren in 837. In 845, a Viking warlord named Ragnar attacked Paris and had to be bought off with 7000 pounds of gold and silver. King Horik seems to have disapproved of these raids, for successful raiders constituted possible rivals. Occasionally, Horik even punished raiders. In 836, Horik sent an embassy to King Louis declaring that he had nothing to do with the raids on Frisia, and that he had ...   more details

  1. Treaty of Heiligen

The Treaty of Heiligen was signed at Heiligen in 811 between the Denmark Danish King Hemming, King of Danes Hemming and Charlemagne . Based on the terms of the accord, the southern boundary of Denmark was established at the Eider River . Moreover, the treaty confirmed the peace established by both signatories in 810 . ref Thursten, p. 67. ref Since the days of King Offa of Angel Offa the Eider river had been the border between the settlement area of the Angles and Saxons . After Charlemagne had Saxon Wars subjected the Duchy of Saxony to his rule, Hemming s predecessor and uncle Gudfred took the chance, crossed the Eider and campaigned the southern lands, which Charles had left to the allied Obotrite s. The king however was killed by his retinue in 808 and Hemming, to assure his rule against his rivaling cousins, sought peace with the Francia Franks . His and the Emperor s negotiators met on an island of the Eider in present day Rendsburg and defined the limits of their spheres of influence. Though in the following decades several quarrels occurred in the border area and the German King Henry the Fowler Henry I conquered Danish Hedeby at the Danevirke in 934, the border was confirmed by Canute the Great and King Conrad II, Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II in 1025 at the betrothal of their children Gunhilda of Denmark Gunhilda and Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor Henry III . For centuries the Eider marked the border between the South Jutland Duchy of Schleswig and Holstein in the Holy Roman Empire resp. the German Confederation . The Duchy of Schleswig Holstein was ruled by one duke and was not to be split up, the duke had become King of Denmark as well. In the Second Schleswig War of 1864 Kingdom of Prussia Prussian and Austrian Empire Austrian troops crossed the river and annexed Schleswig. 1. Hemming Halfdansson

Hemming Halfdansson died 837 was of the Danish race, a most Christian leader . ref ex stirpe Danorum, dux christianissimus , according to Thegan. The translated quotation is from Simon Coupland 1998 , From Poachers to Gamekeepers Scandinavian Warlords and Carolingian Kings , Early Medieval Europe , 7 1 87 and note 11. ref He was probably a son of Halfdan floruit 782 807 Halfdan , a leading Dane who became a vassal of Charlemagne in 807. He was probably related to the Danish royal family, as Hemming was one of their favoured names. The onomastic evidence includes the Danish king Hemming I reigned 810 12 and then a Hemming II, who was recalled to Denmark from Francia by his brothers Harald Klak and Reginfrid after Hemming I s death. This Hemming was probably the same person as Hemming Halfdansson. He probably soon returned to Francia, since there is no evidence of him in Danish politics after he and his brothers were driven out by the sons of Gudfred Godfrid in 813. ref Coupland, 87 88. ref It is probable that Hemming was received by the Franks and granted Walcheren , a fortress in Frisia , as a benefice . It may have been held earlier by his father, it was certainly granted in 841 to the Danes Harald the Younger Harald and Rorik of Dorestad Rorik . He, along with its Frankish count, Eccihard, died defending it from a Viking attack in 837. ref There are references to their deaths in the Annales Fuldenses , Annales Bertiniani and in Thegan, cf. Coupland, 88. ref Probably both Eccihard and Hemming were responsible for the defence of Frisia from the Vikings, as a capitulary of 821 refers to the counts who are responsible for coastal defence . If so, Hemming appears to have been the superior, since Thegan of Trier in his Gesta Hludowici imperatoris , an account of the reign of Louis the Pious , names him first when recording the dead, followed by another leader, Eccihard, and many of the emperor s nobles . ref Eccihardus alius dux et multi optimates imperatoris , quoted i ...   more details

The Danevirke modern Danish spelling Dannevirke in Old Norse language Old Norse Danavirki in German language German Danewerk is a system of Denmark Danish fortifications in Schleswig Holstein Northern Germany . This important linear defensive earthwork was constructed across the neck of the Jutland Cimbrian peninsula during Denmark s Viking Age . It was last used for military purposes in 1864.
