He played in France during World War I as a member of Al Moore s orchestra, and led his own band, primarily in New England , for much of the 1930s. His ensemble featured a large number of sidemen who went on to become noted for their own achievements, including Gene Krupa , Jack Teagarden , Frankie Carle , Jack Jenney , Toots Mondello , Irene Daye , Clark Yocum , Floyd O Brien , Spud Murphy , Boots Mussulli , Brad Gowans , Turk Murphy , Teddy Grace , and Don Fagerquist . Born in Galena, Illinois , Hallett read law to enter the Bar in 1858. He was in private practice in Chicago, Illinois from 1859 to 1860. He was a gold miner in Colorado in 1860, returning to private practice in Denver, Colorado from 1861 to 1865. He was a member of the Colorado Territorial Council from 1863 to 1866. He was in private practice in Denver, Colorado in 1866. He was the chief U.S. Territorial Judge for the District Court for the Territory of Colorado from 1866 to 1877. On January 9, 1877, following the admission of Colorado as a state, Hallett was nominated by President Ulysses Grant to a seat on the newly established United States District Court for the District of Colorado , created by 19 Stat. 61. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on January 12, 1877, receiving his commission the same day. Hallett served until April 7, 1906, when he retired. Hallett was also a professor of Constitutional Law and Federal Jurisprudence at the University of Colorado at Boulder beginning in 1892. He wanted to study art from the time he was young but his parents were members of the Exclusive Bretheren sect and his mother faced excommunication for encouraging him. Hallett was born in St. John s, Newfoundland and Labrador on May 23, 1968, making him the only native St. Johnsman in Great Big Sea. Born to a musical family, Hallett learned to play the saxophone while in school, and taught himself guitar and tin whistle while a teenager. He would later learn to play both the accordion and the fiddle . Hallett attended Memorial University , where he met S an McCann , with whom he founded the Newfoundland Republican Army, an 8 man musical group. After this group collapsed, he and McCann founded a pub act called Rankin Street. After the band s split up in 1993, it evolved into Great Big Sea, in an attempt to bring more of a Newfoundland sound to their music. Hallett has also produced a handful of recordings by other musicians, including Vince Collins s Lifting Out the Stove, and Shanneyganock s Fling out the Flag .
