In common with most stations on the Dungeness line of the railway as far as The Pilot Inn railway station The Pilot Inn , Lade station opened for business on 24 May 1928. Despite having full station status, it was never intended to be a major station. It was not even provided with hard platform surfaces, and the only construction on site was a simple, but elegant, Henry Greenly Greenly style waiting shelter. This had a concrete base with wooden construction above. There were glass windows in the two ends, and an open front for access. The roof included simple decoration at the apex, and overhung the front of the shelter to form an awning type cover for a few feet outside the main building, the overhang being supported by curved wooden supports attached to the front of the shelter. The station was never staffed, and never intended to be staffed. It served a small collection of fishermen s cottages, and was soon reduced in status to a halt. Exactly when this happened is unclear, but photographic evidence from 1936 shows the front of the shelter with two small signs attached one to each side of the open front entrance each marked Lade Halt in capital letters. Shortly after World War II the Dungeness line was reduced to single track in preparation for its re opening in 1947, and at the same time the station shelter at Lade was demolished. However, the halt remained a request stop on the reopened line. In 1968 the ever reducing status of the neighbouring The Pilot Inn railway station brought the two halts together in popular thought. Orphan date September 2010 image PryLeverBar.jpg thumb Pry Lever Bar used on docks, in warehouses & around railroad stations during steam locomotive era The name of the tool, Johnson Bar , may be a generic term related to any long lever acting as a fulcrum or cheater bar , especially upon warehouse docks with tools to leverage cargo upon casters , hand truck s, or a pry lever bar see picture . But in this connotation locomotive , describes a gear selector bar in the transmissions of steam powered locomotives. Historians have not identified the reasons why engineers called the reversing lever a Johnson Bar, but the reversing lever is described in both British, and American railway journals of the time. ref cite book title Locomotive Dictionary, 1st edition, pg 209 url http books.google.com books?id jCJMAAAAMAAJ&pg PA209 accessdate 2009 08 15 format work ref The best accreditation of the invention is documented under the Walschaerts valve gear . The reversing lever in locomotive history is documented from about 1842. The American Railway Master Mechanic s Association had members that published illustrations. Parts for the reversing lever are drawn in the Locomotive Dictionary , 1st edition 1906 , by George Little Fowler. The lever is linked to the valve gear piston inside the high pressure steam port. The steam pressure faucet is closed to cut off power, and after coming to a halt, the valve gear piston could safely be moved a short distance using the lever as a fulcrum linked to the piston inside. Although the linkage was designed to give leverage, the Johnson Bar would take a firm throw to move and lock in position.
