The basement was used to store gasoline and other Flammability flammable materials , which led to the fire quickly raging out of control. The fire began as a brush fire to clear land between present day Main and Cambie Streets that was spread out of control by a strong gale. The GreatFire of 1901 in Jacksonville, Florida was one of the worst disasters in History of Florida Florida history and the largest urban fire in the Southeast. About noon on Friday, May 3, 1901, in the LaVilla area, a spark from a kitchen stove during the lunch hour at a mattress factory set fire to mattresses filled with Spanish moss . The causers thought it could be put out with a few buckets of water and therefore did not sound an alarm until the fire had grown beyond their control.
