The Great Fire of Whitstable in 1869 devastated the coastal town of Whitstable in Kent , England . On the evening of Wednesday, 16 November 1869, the fire swept through the closely built area along The Wall, west of the town s harbour. Given that the population of the town was a little under 2,000, the disaster that befell the little fishing harbour must have been big news across the region, as the fire drew a crowd of 10,000 spectators. ref name fire cite book last Goodsall first Robert title Whitstable, Seasalter and Swalecliffe date 1938 ref It was the local Her Majesty s Coastguard coastguard who on 16 November at about 10.45pm spotted flames coming from the roof of a shop. Little could be done to prevent the progress of the fire, which burst through the roof and spread to other parts of the building, fanned by a brisk north easterly wind. Telegrams and mounted messengers were sent to nearby Canterbury and Faversham calling for such fire engines as were available. 1. Second Great Fire of London

Image Stpaulsblitz.jpg thumb Herbert Mason s iconic photograph taken 29 December 1940, published front page of Daily Mail 31 December 1940 The Second Great Fire of London is a name used to refer to one of the most destructive airstrike air raids of the London The Blitz Blitz over the nights of 29 December 30 December 1940. The raid and the subsequent fire destroyed many Livery Company Livery halls Livery Halls and gutted the medieval Great Hall of the City of London City s Guildhall, London Guildhall , destroying an area arguably greater than that of the Great Fire of London of 1666 . Some 1500 fire s were started, including three major conflagrations consequently, causing a firestorm . In 1666, however, the devastation was overwhelmingly within the City proper in 1940, it extended far beyond. The largest continuous area of Blitz destruction anywhere in UK Britain occurred on this night, stretching south from Islington to the very edge of St Paul s Churchyard. St Paul s Cathedral itself was only saved by the dedication of the London firemen who kept the fire away from the Cathedral and the volunteer firewatchers of the St Paul s Watch who fought to keep the flames from firebombs on its roof from spreading,. A famous photograph taken from the roof of the Daily Mail building by Herbert Mason shows the dome of St Paul s Cathedral rising above clouds of black smoke. References Gaskin M. J.
