The Century Guild of Artists was an English group of art enthusiasts that were active between 1883 and 1892. It was founded in 1882 by Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo. The Century Guild aimed to preserve the artistic trade and the authenticity of the craftsmen behind it. The members were forerunners of the Arts and Crafts Movement which aimed to unify the arts. Roughly 20 people were associated with the guild, but the only members were Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo , Herbert Horne and Selwyn Image . The Guild produced primarily domestic design such as furniture, stained glass, metalwork, decorative painting and architectural design. The style was high end and was based on both 18th century art and Art Nouveau . Despite limited disbursement, the group gained recognition through exhibiting. These designs were all displayed at the Inventions Exhibition London, 1885 , the Exhibition of Navigation and Manufacture Liverpool, 1886 , Pownall Hall 1886 7 Cheshire and the Royal Jubilee Exhibition Manchester, 1887 . The group also published a quarterly magazine called The Century Guild Hobby Horse which ran from 1884 1892. The journal was then renamed The Hobby Horse , and continued for another two years before it ended in 1894. The Hobby Horse served as a way of sharing the views of the Guild and promoted crafted art as opposed to mechanical industry. The Guild influenced designers such as C. F. A. Voysey and Charles Rennie Mackintosh and influenced the formation of The Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. harvnb Evans 2008 References Citation last1 Evans first1 Stuart title Century Guild of Artists publisher Oxford University Press. year 2008 Category British artist groups and collectives Category 1882 establishments Category British furniture designers ... more details

It was founded in New York in 1873 by a firm of Canadian engravers and began publication in March of that year. It continued publication until September 23, 1889. Highly illustrated, its lavish engravings included cartoons, reproductions of paintings, and illustrations of contemporary news events and notable personalities. It was similar in idea to the London newspaper The Graphic , which was founded in 1869 , and which commenced publication of its own Daily Graphic in 1889. Given the overlap in dates for the demise of the New York newspaper, and the commencement of the London one, it is possible that rights to the name were purchased by the English company. Unreferenced date November 2009 Graphic organizers are visual representations of knowledge, concepts, thoughts, or ideas. Graphic Organizers historically have been organized bits of data in easy to understand formats, such as charts, tables, and graphs. In the twentieth century, due to developing technologies in printing, the use of graphic organizers grew substantially. Additionally, graphic organizers entered the realm of education in the late twentieth century as ways of helping students to organize their thoughts as a sort of pre writing exercise . For example, a student is asked, What were the causes of the French Revolution? The student places the question in the middle of a sheet of paper. Branching off of this, the student jots down her ideas, such as poor harvests, unfairness of the Old Regime, etc. Branching off of these are more of the student s thoughts, such as the nobles paid no taxes branching from unfairness of the Old Regime. This concept map thus graphically organizes the student s ideas and knowledge, while serving as the basis of the student s essay answer. Refimprove date December 2009 In ISO IEC 646 commonly known as ASCII and related standards including ISO 8859 and Unicode , a graphic character is any character intended to be written, printed, or otherwise displayed in a form that can be read by humans. In other words, it is any character encoding encoded character that is associated with one or more glyph s. ISO IEC 646 In ISO 646, graphic characters are contained in rows 2 through 7 of the code table. However, two of the characters in these rows, namely the space character SP at row 2 column 0 and the delete delete character DEL also called the rubout character at row 7 column 15, require special mention. The space is considered to be both a graphic character and a control character in ISO 646 this is probably due to it having a visible form on computer terminal s but a control function of moving the print head on teletypes . The delete character is strictly a control character, not a graphic character. This is true not only in ISO 646, but also in all related standards including Unicode. However, many modern character sets deviate from ISO 646, and as a result a graphic character might occupy the position originally reserved for the delete character. Unicode In Unicode, Graphic characters are those with Unicode character properties General Category General Category Letter, Mark, Number, Punctuation, Symbol or Zs space. Other code points General categories Control, Zl line separator, Zp paragraph separator are Format, Control, Private Use, Surrogate, Noncharacter or Reserved unassigned . ref http www.unicode.org versions Unicode5.2.0 ch02.pdf G25564 Chapter 2, table 2.3 ref References references DEFAULTSORT Graphic Character Category Character encoding ja ru ... more details
