unreferenced date June 2011 about the African region other uses GoldCoast disambiguation The GoldCoast was the region of West Africa which is now the nation of Ghana . Early uses of the term refer literally to the coast and not the interior. It was not until the 19th century that the term came to refer to areas that are far from the coast. It was to the east of the Ivory Coast and to the west of the Slave Coast . It was first colonized by the Portugal Portuguese , with settlement in 1482 of the Portuguese GoldCoast . In 1642 this became part of the Dutch GoldCoast , which had been colonized by the Dutch Empire Dutch since 1598. The Dutch stayed in the region until 1871, when the last of their settlements were taken over by the GoldCoastBritishcolonyBritishGoldCoast . There was also the Brandenburger GoldCoast which established a colony in the area in 1682, which later became the Prussian GoldCoast. In 1721 it was sold to the Dutch. The Sweden Swedish also had settlements in the area, with the Swedish GoldCoast established in 1650, but seized by Denmark in 1663, and made part of the Danish GoldCoast . The Danes had been in the goldcoast since 1658. In 1850 all of the settlements became part of the BritishGoldCoast. The British had taken over all of the GoldCoast by 1871. They captured more territory inland in the late nineteenth century after the The Ashanti Ashanti wars. The nation of Ghana was made from the former GoldCoast territory. In 1957 it was one of the first European colonies to become independent. The GoldCoast alphabet was a Latin alphabets Latin alphabet used to write the Akan language during British colonial rule of the GoldCoastBritishcolonyGoldCoast , now Ghana . It differed from the current Akan alphabet in several ways, of which the most fundamental was in vowel notation. Vowels Akan has nine vowels, four pairs that differ whether they have an advanced tongue root sc atr , and IPA a , which is sc atr neutral. In the GoldCoast script, the non sc atr vowels were written with the five vowels of the Latin script, a e i o u, and the sc atr vowels by adding a subscript dot to these. The sc atr vowels have a hollow sound to them, whereas the non sc atr vowels sound rather like the lax vowel s of English. In modern Akan, seven vowel letters are used, with two of them being ambiguous. In addition, the GoldCoast script used a tilde to mark nasal vowel s, which are not marked in modern Akan. class wikitable IPA Phoneme Sound Gold br Coast Modern br Akan align center i i i align center i i rowspan 2 e align center e e align center e e align center a a rowspan 2 a rowspan 2 a align center a align center o o align center o o rowspan 2 o align center u u align center u u u nowiki nowiki The allophone of IPA a produced by vowel harmony with sc atr vowels is not itself sc atr in Asante dialect, but nontheless is markedly distinct from the IPA a allophone.
