  1. Archaic globalization

Archaic globalization is a phase in the history of globalization , often broadly associated with the early modern period and specifically the 16th century. This periodization was proposed by the historian A.G. Hopkins in 2001. ref A.G. Hopkins, ed. Globalisation in World History Norton, 2001 ref Relative to the modern articulations of globalization that followed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, archaic globalization involved small scale contacts between regional networks of traders or missionaries. A typical instance of archaic globalization might involve European ethnic groups European merchants or their Armenia n, Muslim or India n counterparts sailing to trading outposts in India or China to purchase small quantities of high value luxury goods such as silk , porcelain or spices . Because of the danger and great cost of long distance travel in the pre modern period, archaic globalization grew out of the trade in high value commodities which took up a small amount of space. Examples of such luxury goods would include Chinese silks, Indian Calico textile calicoes , Arabian horse s, Gemstone gems and spices or drugs such as nutmeg , cloves , black pepper pepper , ambergris and opium . Democratic globalization is a movement towards an institutional system of global democracy that would give world citizens a say in world organizations. This would, in their view, bypass nation states, corporate oligopolies, ideological Non governmental organization NGO s, cults and mafias. One of its most prolific proponents is the United Kingdom British political thinker David Held . In the last decade he published a dozen books regarding the spread of democracy from territorially defined nation states to a system of global governance that encapsulates the entire world. These proponents state that democratic globalization s purpose is to expand globalization and make people closer and more united. have it reach all fields of activity and knowledge, not only the economic one, even if that one is crucial to develop the well being of world citizens. give world citizen s a democracy democratic access and a say to those global activities. Supporters of the democratic globalization movement draw a distinction between their movement and the one most popularly known as the anti globalization movement, claiming that their movement avoids ideological agenda about economics and social matters. Democratic globalization supporters state that the choice of political orientations should be left to the world citizens, via their participation in world democratic institutions. Some proponents in the anti globalization movement do not necessarily disagree with this position. This global economy, it is further argued in what might be termed the globalisation hypothesis , has made domestic economic strategies useless in the face of the world market a world market in which a new breed of truly transnational corporations are the dominant actors. The authors question the extent to which this globalisation hypothesis is firstly an accurate portrayal of how things actually are, and secondly whether this is how they ought to be. There is a strong polemic element to the book. Five important criticisms of the globalisation hypothesis They argue, against the globalisation hypothesis, or rather against what is best described by them as strong versions of the hypothesis, on the basis of the following five interrelated points those advancing the globalisation thesis do not provide a coherent concept of the world economy in which supra national forces and agents are decisive. that pointing ...
