It is to the mandolin what the viola is to the violin the four double courses of strings tuned in fifths to the same pitches as the viola C G D A low to high , a fifth lower than a mandolin . However, the mandola, although now rarer, is the ancestor of the mandolin, the name of which means simply little mandola . The name mandola may originate with the ancient pandura , and was also rendered as mandora , the change perhaps having been due to approximation to the Italian word for almond . The instrument developed from the lute at an early date, being more compact and cheaper to build, but the sequence of development and nomenclature in different regions is now hard to discover. Historically related instruments include the mandore instrument mandore , mandole, pandurina, bandurina, and&mdash in 16th century Germany&mdash the Gittern quinterne or chiterna. Biography Diessl was born Gustav Karl Balthasar in Vienna . In 1916, he was an extra on different stages in Vienna but was soon recruited into the army for World War I . During his military service, he was held prisoner for a year. After the war, Diessl started training as a stage designer but left to pursue a professional career in acting. Meanwhile, he played for a touring company and in 1921 had his first fixed engagement at the Neue Wiener B hne . That same year he appeared in his film debut, G. W. Pabst s In Banne der Kralle . He continued to act under the Nazi regime and appeared in the notorious 1944 45 propaganda epic Kolberg . After his first marriage ended, Diessl lived with actress Camilla Horn for several years.
