  1. George Frederick Handel (Roubiliac)

Image HandelVA.jpg thumb Handel, 1738, Louis Fran ois Roubiliac 1702 1762 V&A Museum no. A.3&A 1965 This sculpture of composer George Frideric Handel 1685 1759 is by Louis Fran ois Roubiliac 1702 1762 . It was commissioned by the impresario Jonathan Tyers for his famous pleasure gardens at Vauxhall. Handel is shown in the guise of Orpheus, holding a lyre. Despite the classical allusion, he wears informal contemporary dress a soft cap, a long shirt open at the neck, a full loose gown, and slippers, one of which lies beneath his right foot. His post is also casual. He is seated cross legged, leaning on a pile of bound scores of his works, including Alexander s Feast which was completed the same month the statues was finished. The statue is unprecedented, for not only was the sitter portrayed with startling informality, but it was the first life size marble depicting a living artist. Until this date such public statues were erected only for monarchs, noblemen or military leaders. Roubiliac was a native of France, although his known surviving work was executed in England. Handel is his earliest known independent sculpture. When it went on display in Vauxhall Gardens in 1738 it proved an immediate success, helping to establish Roubiliac as one of the leading sculptors in England. Roubiliac was trained in Lyon, later working in Dresden under a leading Baroque sculpture, Balthasar Permoser 1651 1732 , and then studying in Paris before moving to London in about 1730. All his known surviving works were executed in Britain. He specialised in portrait busts and funerary monuments, and was renowned for his handling of marble, particularly his creation of subtle surface textures. 1. HANDEL

About UK s National Attack Warning System code name the German British Baroque composer Handel unreferenced date August 2008 HANDEL was the code name for the United Kingdom UK s National Attack Warning System in the Cold War . It consisted of a small console consisting of two microphones, lights and gauges. The reason behind this was to provide a back up if anything failed. If an enemy air strike was detected, a key on the left hand side of the console would be turned and two lights would come on. Then the operator would press & hold down a red button and give the message ATTACK WARNING RED ATTACK WARNING RED The message would be sent to the police by the telephone carrier wave frequencies used for the speaking clock , who would in turn activate the air attack sirens using the local telephone lines. The rationale was to kill two birds with one stone, as it reduced running costs it would most likely be used only once in its working life, though it was regularly tested and the telephone lines were under constant test by sharing with a public service. That means a fault could be detected in time to give a warning. class wikitable Message How it s received Action to be taken Notes Attack warning Warbling note followed by message Attack warning RED This would be followed by a control signal, activating the powered ones. 1. Esther (Handel)

handel oratorios Esther HWV 50 is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel and is generally acknowledged to be the first English oratorio. Handel set a libretto by John Arbuthnot and Alexander Pope after the Esther drama Old Testament drama by Jean Racine . It is a short 1 hr. 40 min. work compared to Handel s later oratorios. The work was originally composed in about 1718, but was heavily revised into a full oratorio in 1732. ref name Grove2001Vol10Page784 NewGrove2001 Handel, George Frideric Anthony Hicks x 784 ref Masque 1718 Somewhat surprisingly for an oratorio, the work was originally staged or semi staged. It began as a masque HWV 50a , composed early in Handel s English career, and before the body of his success as an opera composer. It was first composed and performed, probably, at Cannons house Cannons , where the James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos Duke of Chandos employed Handel in 1718 as resident composer writing for his patron s singers and small orchestra. Little is known about this first version of Esther . It had a few other private performances but otherwise remained untouched for more than a decade thereafter. Oratorio 1732 In 1731, Handel had different needs since public tastes were changing. London s most famous and popular composer of Italian operas was finding the enthusiasm of his audience for the genre to be waning. He returned to Esther, revised it, and presented an expanded oratorio version HWV 50b in a public premiere at the King s Theatre in the Haymarket on 2 May 1732. The work was popular and was frequently performed as a staple of Handel s oratorio repertoire throughout the rest of his career. James Murray recounts as an anecdote of the 1732 premiere ... . The Alchemist , HWV 43, is incidental music used for the revival of Ben Jonson s play The Alchemist play The Alchemist at the Her Majesty s Theatre Queen s Theatre , London on 14 January 1710. The work is an arrangement, by an anonymous composer, of music written by Handel . All but one of the movements were taken from the extended overture to Handel s first Italian opera Rodrigo opera Rodrigo . The overture introduced the play and the other movements were used to fill the gaps between acts. The incidental music was published in full a few months after the first performance however, it is unlikely that Handel received any payment for either the performance or publication of the music.
