The system traces its history to 16 December 1955, and the formation of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the capital Antananarivo. It quickly established itself as the main center for higher education in the country, and was renamed the University of Madagascar in 1961. The main branch opened five more branches in Antsiranana , Fianarantsoa , Toamasina , Toliara , and Mahajanga . In 1988, all branches of the system became independent of each other, and the name University of Madagascar was dropped in favor of more geography specific titles. The Madagascar mangroves are a coastal ecoregion , in the Mangrove forest aquatic biome , of mangrove swamps in rivers and estuaries in Madagascar , mainly on the west coast. Location and description The mangrove swamps are located in flat coastal areas where the ocean tides wash salt water high into the mouths of rivers which are bringing nutrient rich soil down to the coast. For mangroves to thrive there also needs to be some natural feature such as hilly terrain or a coral reef to shelter the coast from ocean storms and the monsoon s. The French Colonialism colonial period disturbed a very small percentage of land area, and even included some useful experiments in Sustainable forestry sustainable forestry . Slash and burn techniques, a component of some shifting cultivation systems have been practised by the inhabitants of Madagascar for centuries. As of 2006 some of the major agricultural products from slash and burn methods are wood , charcoal and grass for Zebu grazing. These practises have taken perhaps the greatest toll on land fertility since the end of French rule, mainly due to overpopulation pressures. The Madagascar dry deciduous forests have been preserved generally better than the eastern rainforests or the high central plateau, presumably due to historically less overpopulation population density and water crisis scarcity of water moreover, the present day lack of road access further limits human access. There has been some slash and burn activity in the western dry forests, reducing forest cover and the soil nutrient content. Slash and burn is a method sometimes used by shifting cultivators to create short term yields from marginal soils. When practiced repeatedly, or without intervening fallow periods, the nutrient poor soils may be exhausted or eroded to an unproductive state. Further protection of Madagascar s forests would assist in preservation of these diverse ecosystems, which have a very high ratio of endemic organisms to total species.
