otheruses Mysteries disambiguation The Mysteries is a version of the medieval English mystery plays presented at London s Royal National Theatre National Theatre in 1977. The cycle of three plays tells the story of the Bible from the creation to the last judgement. It is based largely on the Wakefield Cycle Wakefield cycle of plays but incorporating some scenes from the York Mystery Plays York , Chester Mystery Plays Chester and Coventry Mystery Plays Coventry canons and adapted by poet Tony Harrison , working with the original cast, into three parts Nativity , The Passion and Doomsday. Directed by Bill Bryden , it was first performed on Easter Saturday 1977 on the terrace of the National Theatre building on the South Bank, London. It then went into the repertoire in the Cottesloe Theatre part of the South Bank complex later in 1985 transferring to the Lyceum Theatre London Lyceum Theatre then in use as a ballroom and so without seating. Harrison s concept was to present the original stories as Story within a story plays within plays , using as his characters the na ve but pious craftsmen and guild members, to some extent modernised to represent the trades of today God, for example, created the world with the help of a real fork lift truck ref cite book last Normington first Katie title Modern mysteries contemporary productions of medieval English cycle dramas publisher Boydell and Brewer location Melton, Suffolk, England date October 2007 page 86 isbn 9781843841289 ref acting out the parts of the story that their mediaeval counterparts would have done. Bartholomew Dowling 1823 November 20, 1863 was an Irish people Irish author. Biography Dowling was born in Listowel, County Kerry. While he was still a child, his parents emigrated to Canada , where they remained for some years, and where Dowling received a part of his education. Returning to Ireland, after the death of the father, the family settled in Limerick , and older biographies misidentify Limerick as the city of Dowling s birth. Burdened with the task of caring for his mother and younger brothers and sisters, Dowling did not follow literature as a profession. He published short pieces, mostly anonymously, while working in the mercantile trades for support. He traveled to California in the summer of 1852 and engaged in mining in the Northern California northern counties . Not finding this work congenial, he took to farming in Contra Costa County, California Contra Costa , where he built himself a home and entertained John Mitchel , General James Shields , and Terence MacManus , as visitors.
