  1. Operation Farrier

Operation Farrier was a raid by British Commandos during the Second World War on the Yugoslavia n island of Mljet . The raid by the Long Range Desert Group , No. 2 Commando and No. 43 Royal Marine Commando , all under the command of the 2nd Special Service Brigade , started on 22 May 1943. It came about because a previously planned raid Operation Foothound on the Ugljan and Pasman islands had to be abandoned. There were already some small partisan units and an American Office of Strategic Services agent on Mljet who supplied intelligence on the strength and locations of German forces. In the early morning of 22 May the commandos, divided into two groups, landed on the south coast of Mljet. They manoeuvred behind the supposed German positions at Babino polje and called on them to surrender. Moving in closer they discovered that the Germans had withdrawn from their positions. Some German mortars then landed amongst the commandos and unable to locate their position returned to their waiting ships and returned back to Vis island Vis island. ref cite web accessdate 15 June 2010 publisher Naval History title Naval codewords url http www.naval history.net xGM Ops CodeNamesAlpha.htm ref References Reflist British Commando raids of the Second World War coord missing Category Conflicts in 1943 Category World War II British Commando raids F Category Battles involving the United Kingdom ...   more details

  1. Francis Clater

One source date December 2010 Francis Clater 1756 1823 , was a farrier and writer. Clater wrote Every Man his own Cattle Doctor 1810 and Every Man his own Farrier. In the preface to the last named work, which was published at Newark on Trent in 1783, when the writer was twenty six, Clater describes himself as farrier, late of Newark, and states that he served a regular apprenticeship and one year as journeyman to the late W. Frost, farrier, of Nottingham , and being his nephew, succeeded to all the secrets of his profession. The work was published at the desire of the numerous gentlemen and farmers who were Clater s employers, and appears to have roused the hostility of farriers generally. The writer insists chiefly on careful diagnosis of individual cases, and the use of pure drugs. Clater afterwards resided for many years at East Retford , where he practised as a chemist and druggist, as well as a cattle doctor, and, according to the inscription on a small memorial tablet set up in the methodist chapel in Newgate Street in that town, was much respected, and there died, on 29 May 1823, in the sixty seventh year of his age. The publication of his works marked a stage in veterinary progress, and their lasting popularity may be judged from the fact that, at the hands of the writer s son, John Clater, and subsequent editors, the former went through over twelve, and the latter over thirty editions. In the later ones as the edition of Every Man his own Farrier by Mayhew, published in 1850, and of the Cattle Doctor by Armytage, published in 1870 much exploded conjecture has been omitted, and the text almost entirely rewritten. 1. Corsair Marine

Advert date August 2010 Corsair Marine International is an international sailboat builder that builds trimaran s. It is now headquartered in Vietnam . History Corsair Marine was founded in 1984 in Chula Vista , California by John T. Walton son of Sam Walton , founder of the retail giant, Wal Mart . In 1994, John Walton sold Corsair Marine to Paul Koch who was Corsair Marine s Australian Dealer at the time. Koch also owned a boat building company in Australia called OSTAC and had worked with Farrier. So when Koch bought Corsair Marine, he invited Farrier to return. Corsair Marine employed Ian Farrier trimaran designer . Farrier stayed with the company until 1991 when he decided to pursue his own business interests. Farrier agreed and worked at Corsair Marine for the next 6 years. When Farrier set off in 2000 to pursue his own business interests again, Corsair Marine purchased all rights to his trimaran designs. Subsequently, the branding changed from the Farrier branding of F to the Corsair style using the C . By way of example, the F 31 trimaran became the C31 or Corsair 31 trimaran. In 2006 Corsair Marine took the strategic decision to relocate its Head Office and production facility from California to Ho Chi Minh City HCMC , Vietnam. In the USA, margins had been under increasing pressure due to escalating costs and the fact that trimaran customers were unwilling to pay higher prices. Moving off shore created an opportunity to achieve cost savings. Ultimately, Vietnam was chosen for a number of reasons including its political stability, attractive FDI foreign direct investment provisions, booming economy and its pool of young, talented, skilled, energetic, and resourceful labour. A number of key staff from California relocated to Vietnam to facilitate the successful migration of the business and the setting up and running of the factory. Now, Corsair Marine employs more than 100 Vietnamese. Since 1984, Corsair Marine has sold more than 1,600 trimarans through its g ...   more details
