During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was one of the preeminent banking houses in Europe. It was established in 1795 by Joseph Mendelssohn in Berlin. In 1804 his younger brother Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy joined the company. In 1815 they moved into their new headquarters at J gerstra e 51, thereby laying the foundations of Berlin s financial district. Mendelssohn & Co. remained in that building until its divestiture in 1939. Mendelssohn quickly rose to prominence among European banks. Since the 1850s they acted as Royal Warrant Royal bankers of the Russian Empire Russian Tsar , dominating the Central European financial market for Russian sovereign bond s until World War I . The Mendelssohn family through the descendants of the founding brothers continued to run the company. Mendelssohn & Co. survived the Wall Street Crash of 1929 financial meltdown of the 1930s comparatively well. Following the death of Franz von Mendelssohn and Paul von Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1935, Rudolf L b was appointed as chairman of the bank, the first non family member to be chairman. In cooperation with Albert Heilmann , Mendelssohn constructed the Europahaus House of Europe in Berlin , which today houses the de Bundesministerium f r wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development . He emigrated during the Third Reich , and died in Geneva , Switzerland in 1959. A claimed connection to the family of the famous Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn has not yet been confirmed. The Mendelssohn Club is a music institution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , founded in 1874 by William Wallace Gilchrist , a major figure in the 19th century music of Philadelphia . The chorus is under the direction of Alan Harler, professor of choral conducting at Temple University . Bruce Carey directed the chorus from 1926 1934. She came from a left wing political family, was inspired by the Paris May 1968 in France student risings in May 1968, and became a political radical in Britain. Mendelsohn was convicted of conspiracy to cause explosions as part of The Angry Brigade , a ruling she insisted was unjust. After her release she raised a family, resumed her education and devoted her life to art and to poetry. She grew somewhat isolated from the rest of society, but her friends saw to it that some of her work was published.
