    Unreferenced date January 2007 Orphan date February 2009 The Munich Fanny Mendelssohn String Quartet, Renate Eggebrecht 1st violin , Mario Korunic 2nd violin , Stefan Berg viola , Friedemann Kupsa violoncello , was founded in 1989 in the occasion of the performance and publication of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel s String Quartet in E flat major and Piano Quartet in A flat major at the Gasteig Munich . The String Quartet made a strong effort for music by women composers and played many first performances a.o. works of Violeta Dinescu , Gloria Coates , Fukuo Yamagushi , Renate Birnstein and Mayako Kubo Reinbert Evers , guitar . The four musicians recorded the chamber music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel Stefan Mickisch, piano and Ethel Smyth as CD world premiere recordings. They presented the CD world premieres of the String Quartets of Elisabeth Lutyens . Gloria Coates and Violeta Dinescu and also CD recordings of the String Quartets of Grazyna Bacewicz , Germane Tailleferre , Arthur Bliss and Darius Milhaud Ulrike Sonntag, soprano . In 1997 the ensemble recorded the great piano chamber music of Max Reger , his Piano Quintet c minor and his two Piano Quartets Wolfram Lorenzen , piano . He was the oldest son of the influential philosopher Moses Mendelssohn . In 1795, he founded his own banking house. In 1804, his younger brother Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy , the father of the composer Felix Mendelssohn , joined the company. The bank Mendelssohn & Co. continued under the control of the Mendelssohn family and would rise to prominence during the 19th century, becoming one of the most important and influential German banks during the early 20th century. Although the Mendelssohns had largely given up their Jewish religion by 1900, the bank was shut down by the Nazi s in 1938 under the policy of Aryanization .     The Mendelssohn Club is a music institution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , founded in 1874 by William Wallace Gilchrist , a major figure in the 19th century music of Philadelphia . The chorus is under the direction of Alan Harler, professor of choral conducting at Temple University . Bruce Carey directed the chorus from 1926 1934. In 1988, Alan Harler was named artistic director of the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, only the twelfth person to hold that position since the chorus s founding in 1874.
