  1. Religious fanaticism

Essay like date February 2009 Religious fanaticism is fanaticism related to a person s, or a group s, devotion to a religion . However, religious fanaticism is a subjective evaluation defined by the culture context that is performing the evaluation. What constitutes fanaticism in another s behavior or belief is determined by the core assumptions of the one doing the evaluation. As such, there is currently no constant academic standard for what defines a fanatical religious position. As with any fanaticism e.g. militantism, and anti religious fanaticism , it has the danger to be bigoted, rely largely on sweeping statements in some cases entirely and generalizations often twisting what its opponents are actually saying or the meaning to what the speaker wishes their opponent had actually said or meant. Often the arguments come across as bigoted, completely unwilling and unable to fully take on an opponent s point at any stage, just like their religious extremist counterparts, whom they openly despise although they are often assertions and not arguments, again just like many religious fanatics and will actively demonize those they oppose. In his book, Holy War, Just War , Lloyd Steffen says, Religious fanaticism . . . invokes the idea of ultimacy, and its presence in religious life is undeniable. ref Reference idSteffen2007 Steffen, Lloyd. 1. Remorse for Intemperate Speech

Remorse for Intemperate Speech is a poem written by Ireland Irish poet William Butler Yeats . It appeared in his 1933 volume of poems The Winding Stair and Other Poems . Yeats wrote this poem in August 1931. The contents speaks about the fanatic feelings and the capacity for hatred a person can feel in the dark part of the heart. The poem, written in three stanzas with an AABCB rhyme scheme, is a lament on the anger and hatred that the Irish cannot ever really let go of an inheritance of injustice and righteous resistance carried on for so long that it continues to tear at generation after generation. Spectres of bloody battles past make it almost impossible for the Irish to set aside their uncontrollable anger and fanaticism buried deep in the culture. A fanaticism, at times, more damning than the original plundering English oppression, very nearly creating a permenent impediment to making peace with themselves or with their past. 1. One Step from Earth

One Step from Earth is a collection of science fiction stories written by Harry Harrison and published in 1970. The stories in the collection are tied together by the central theme of teleportation , or Teleportation matter transmission as the author phrases it. A particularly novel variety of teleportation can be seen in this short story collection. Rather than using the Star Trek metaphor of disassembling and reassembling something, MT works by taking two screens and aligning them to share the same part of another dimension called B space . What goes in one comes out the other , as one character puts it. The stories explore the technical difficulties of the system the screens can be separated by theoretically infinite space, but the quality of that space such as the presence of gravitational fields can affect transmission as well as the social implications of having such a device. In one story, Waiting Place , a one way MT screen is used to dump criminals on an isolated planet where they will only be a danger to each other in another, Wife to the Lord , a man achieves godhood in the eyes of his people by using the planet s sole MT screen to work miracles. The collection includes the short stories, One Step from Earth Pressure No War, or Battle s Sound Wife to the Lord Waiting Place The Life Preservers From Fanaticism, or for Reward Heavy Duty A Tale of the Ending References reflist Category 1970 short story collections Category Short story collections by Harry Harrison ...   more details

The Last Summer of Reason is a novel by Algeria n writer Tahar Djaout . It was originally written and published in French language French . The English language English translation was produced by Marjolijn de Jagar , and published by Ruminator Press in 2001, with a foreword by Wole Soyinka . The novel was published Posthumous work posthumously . Plot Boualem Yekker is a bookseller in a country probably modelled on Algeria. His home is firmly in the grip of religious Fundamentalism fundamentalists , but only recently it was once a republic, but now it is a Community in the Faith . Djaout presents readers with a terrifying world of religious fundamentalism comparable to George Orwell Orwell s 1984, but substituting a religious ditatorship for a purely political one. At first Yekker is only on the periphery of danger. He is neither elegant nor talented , which puts him out of the spotlight what is persecuted above all, and more than people s opinions, is their ability to create and propagate beauty. Still, Yekker is a purveyor of these outrageous idea and beauty filled objects known as books, so he doesn t fit in too well in this new, retrograde society. Business isn t exactly booming, of course. Touchingly Djaout describes Yekker s brief moments of hope when he sees people gazing in the shop window. But there is hardly a market for the sorts of books he has any longer. One acquaintance, Ali Elbouliga, still comes to while away time there. Otherwise, Yekker remains largely alone in his bookish world and the books ultimately prove almost as much a burden as a solace. Family life also gets more complicated when his daughter turns on him. The illness of fanaticism had attacked her. She is transformed, covered with superior certainties . Yekker tries to continue to live his life in the manner he is accustomed to, but there is no escape from the encroaching fanaticism. It crushes all opposition.
