The term Extravagantes from the Latin extra , outside vagari , to wander is applied to the canon law of the Roman Catholic Church , to designate some papal decretal s not contained in certain canonical collections which possess a special authority. Bernard of Pavia designated under the name of Breviarium Extravagantium , or Digest of the Extravagantes , the collection of papal documents which he compiled between 1187 and 1191. 1. Canon law (Catholic Church)

Canon Law Canon Law , the Canon law of the Catholic Church , is a fully developed legal system, with all the necessary elements courts, lawyers, judges, a fully articulated legal code and principles of legal interpretation. The academic degrees in canon law are the J.C.B. Juris Canonici Baccalaureatus , Bachelor of Canon Law, normally taken as a graduate degree , J.C.L. Juris Canonici Licentiatus , Licentiate of Canon Law and the J.C.D. Juris Canonici Doctor , Doctor of Canon Law . Because of its specialized nature, advanced degrees in civil law or theology are normal prerequisites for the study of canon law. Early sources In the first millennium of the Roman Church, the canons of various ecumenical and local councils were supplemented with decretal s of the pope s these were gathered together into collections such as the Liber Extra 1234 , the Liber Sextus 1298 and the Clementines 1317 . Much of the jurisprudential style was adapted from the Roman Law Code of Justinian . As a result, Roman ecclesiastical courts tend to follow the Roman Law style of continental Europe, featuring collegiate panels of judges and an investigative form of proceeding, called inquisitorial , from the Latin inquirere , to enquire . This is in contrast to the adversarial form of proceeding found in the Common Law system of English and U.S. law, which features such things as juries and single judges. In the thirteenth century, the Roman Church began to collect and organise its canon law, which after a millennium of development had become a complex and difficult system of interpretation and cross referencing. In 1582 a compilation was made of the Decreta, Extra, the Sext, the Clementines and the Extravagantes that is, the decretals of the popes from Pope John XXII to Pope Sixtus IV . See Corpus Juris Canonici . 1. Abbreviator

Abbreviator , plural Abbreviators in English or Abbreviatores in Latin, also called Breviators , were a body of writers in the papal Apostolic Chancery chancery , whose business was to sketch out and prepare in due form the papal bull pope s bulls , Papal brief briefs and consistory consistorial decrees before these are written out in extenso by the scriptores . They are first mentioned in the papal bull s Extravagantes of Pope John XXII and of Pope Benedict XII . After the protonotary protonotaries left the sketching of the minutes to the abbreviators, those de Parco majori , who ranked as prelate s, were the most important officers of the apostolic chancery. By the time of Pope Martin V their signature was made essential to the validity of the acts of the chancery and they obtained in course of time many important privileges. Roman lay origin Abbreviators are those who make an abridgment or abstract of a long writing or discourse by contracting the parts, i.e. the words and sentences an abbreviated form of writing common among the Romans. Abbreviations were of two kinds the use of a single letter for a single word, the use of a sign, note, or mark for a word or phrase. The Emperor Justinian forbade the use of abbreviations in the compilation of the Digest and afterwards extended his prohibition to all other writings. This prohibition was not universally obeyed. The abbreviators found it to their own convenience and interest to use the abbreviated form, and especially was this the case at Rome. The early Christians practised the abbreviated mode, no doubt as an easy and safe way of communicating with one another and safeguarding their secrets from enemies and false brethren. Ecclesiastical abbreviatores In course of time the Apostolic Chancery adopted this mode of writing as the curial style, still further abridging by omitting the diphthong s ae and oe , and likewise all lines and marks of punctuation. The ecclesiastical Abbreviators were officials of the Holy See ...   more details
