In image processing , computer graphics , and photography , exposure fusion is a technique for blending multiple exposures of the same scene into a single image. As in high dynamic range imaging HDRI or just HDR , the goal is to capture a scene with a higher dynamic range than the camera is capable of capturing with a single exposure. However, because no HDR image is ever created during exposure fusion, it cannot be considered an HDR technique. ref Citation title Exposure Fusion url http research.edm.uhasselt.be tmertens papers exposure fusion reduced.pdf year 2007 journal Pacific Graphics last1 Mertens first1 Tom last2 Kautz first2 Jan last3 Van Reeth first3 Frank accessdate 2011 01 21 ref ref name Evans2009 Citation title Exposure Fusion What is it? Unreferenced date November 2008 In photography , exposure range may refer to any of several types of dynamic range The Film speed Light sensitivity range of photographic film, paper, or digital camera sensors. The luminosity range of a scene being photographed. The opacity range of developed film images The reflectance range of images on photographic papers. The exposure range of a device is usually expressed in stops , which are equivalent to math log 2 c math where c is the medium or device s contrast ratio . For example, average DV Digital Video DV has a contrast ratio of 45 1, so its exposure range is roughly 5.5 stops. Film has an exposure range of approximately 14 stops, currently the highest in motion picture mediums. Exposure is usually controlled by changing the lens aperture the amount of light it gathers , the shutter speed how long light is gathered or sensitivity how strongly the film or sensor responds to light. Changing exposure does not change the exposure range. Image HDR example exposure.jpeg thumb 600px center Three exposures of the same image at different exposure levels. Note that some details present in the darkest image are not present in the lightest image, and vice versa. A graduated neutral density filter can be also used to improve the reproduction of the exposure range of the scene, by darkening bright parts of the image. A graduated filter will reduce the extreme highlights of an image, such as a clear, open sky as well as sunlight. The filter is usually an even gradation of neutral gray to clear, covering the top third to half of the filter in gray. Therefore, it mostly affects the top third to half of the frame s exposure, leaving the highlights in the bottom half to two thirds unaffected. Exposure latitude is the extent to which a light sensitive material can be overexposed or underexposed and still achieve an acceptable result. Since the acceptability of the result is dependent on both personal aesthetics and artistic intentions, the measurement of exposure latitude is, by definition, somewhat subjective. However, the relative values between different types of film are generally agreed upon reversal film tends to have very little latitude, while color negative film has considerably more. It is not to be confused with dynamic range , the range of light intensities a medium can capture. A recording medium with greater dynamic range will be able to record more details in the dark and light areas of a picture. Latitude depends on dynamic range. If the same scene can be recorded using less than the full brightness range available to the medium, the exposure can be shifted along the range without clipping data values in the shadows or highlights. Greater exposure latitude allows one to compensate for errors in exposure while retaining quality. In the advancement of digital cinematography , expanding the exposure latitude is a critical ingredient that has often been a central part of professional critiques of the new camera systems because digital systems have a much narrower latitude than film.
