  1. Ewens's sampling formula

In population genetics , Ewens sampling formula , introduced by Warren Ewens , states that under certain conditions specified below , if a random sample of n gamete s is taken from a population and classified according to the gene at a particular locus genetics locus then the probability that there are a sub 1 sub allele s represented once in the sample, and a sub 2 sub alleles represented twice, and so on, is math operatorname Pr a 1, dots,a n n over theta theta 1 cdots theta n 1 prod j 1 n theta a j over j a j a j , math for some positive number , whenever a sub 1 sub , ..., a sub n sub is a sequence of nonnegative integers such that math a 1 2a 2 3a 3 cdots na n n. , math The phrase under certain conditions , used above, must of course be made precise. The assumptions are 1 the sample size n is small by comparison to the size of the whole population, and 2 the population is in statistical equilibrium under mutation and genetic drift and the role of selection at the locus in question is negligible, and 3 every mutant allele is novel. See also idealised population . This is a probability distribution on the set of all integer partition partitions of the integer n . Among probabilists and statisticians it is often called the multivariate Ewens distribution . When 0, the probability is 1 that all n genes are the same. When 1, then the distribution is precisely that of the integer partition induced by a uniformly distributed random permutation . As     , the probability ... integer m is just what the formula above would give if m were put in place of n . It is an application of McNemar s test . A specificity of the TDT is that it will detect genetic linkage only in the presence of genetic association . While genetic association can be caused by population structure, genetic linkage will not be affected, which makes the TDT robust to the presence of population structure. The case of trios one affected child per family Description of the test We first describe the TDT in the case where families consist of trios two parents and one affected child . Our description follows the notations used in Spielman, McGinnis & Ewens 1993 ref name Spielman93 . Much research involving probability is done under the auspices of applied probability , the application of probability theory to other scientific and engineering domains. However, while such research is motivated to some degree by applied problems, it is usually the mathematics mathematical aspects of the problems that are of most interest to researchers as is typical of applied mathematics in general . Applied probabilists are particularly concerned with the application of stochastic process es, and probability more generally, to the natural, applied and social sciences, including biology , physics including astronomy , chemistry , computer science and information technology , and economics . 1. TUNIS

TUNIS T oronto Uni versity S ystem was a Unix like operating system , developed at the University of Toronto in the early 1980s. TUNIS was a portable operating system compatible with Version 7 Unix Unix V7 , but with a completely redesigned kernel computer science kernel , written in Concurrent Euclid programming language Concurrent Euclid . Programs that ran under Version 7 Unix Unix V7 could be run under TUNIS with no modification. TUNIS was designed for teaching, and was intended to provide a model for the design of well structured, highly portable, easily understood Unix like operating systems . It made extensive use of Concurrent Euclid programming language Concurrent Euclid modules to isolate machine dependencies and provide a clean internal structure through information hiding , and of Concurrent Euclid programming language Concurrent Euclid s built in processes and synchronization features to make it easy to understand and maintain. TUNIS targeted the PDP 11 and Motorola Motorola 6809 6809 and 68000 architectures, and supported distribution across multiple CPUs using Concurrent Euclid programming language Concurrent Euclid s synchronization features. 1. Watterson estimator

Context date October 2009 In population genetics , the Watterson estimator is a method for estimating the population mutation rate , math theta 4N e mu math , where math N e math is the effective population size and math mu math is the per generation mutation rate of the population of interest harvtxt Watterson 1975 . The assumptions made are that there is a sample of n haploid individuals from the population of interest, that there are an infinitely many alleles possible, and that math n ll N e math . The estimate of math theta math , often denoted as math hat theta w math , is math hat theta w K over a n , math where K is the number of segregating sites an example of a segregating site would be a single nucleotide polymorphism in the sample and math a n sum n 1 i 1 1 over i math is the n   &minus   1 th harmonic number . This estimate is based on coalescent theory . Watterson s estimator is commonly used for its simplicity. The estimator is bias of an estimator unbiased and the variance of the estimator decreases with increasing sample size or recombination rate. However, the estimator can be biased by population structure. For example, math hat theta w math is downwardly biased in an exponential growth exponentially growing population.
