In the final ten years of Lacydes life c. 215 c. 205 , Evander and Telecles had helped run the Academy due to Lacydes being seriously ill. They continued running the Academy after the death of Lacydes, without formally being elected scholarchs. On Telecles death in 167 6 BC, Evander remained scholarch for a few more years. Evander himself was succeeded by his pupil Hegesinus of Pergamon Hegesinus . Evander McNair April 15, 1820 &ndash November 13, 1902 was a Brigadier general United States brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War . Biography Evander McNair was born at Laurel Hill, North Carolina Laurel Hill in Scotland County, North Carolina . His parents moved to Simpson County, Mississippi soon after his birth. In his early twenties McNair opened a mercantile business in Jackson, Mississippi . During the Mexican American War Mexican War McNair joined the 1st Mississippi Rifles under the command of Colonel Jefferson Davis , who would later become President of the Confederate States of America Confederacy . In 1856 McNair moved to Washington, Arkansas , and continued his business there until Arkansas secession seceded from the Union. McNair raised seven companies of infantry which was augmented with other volunteers and designated the Arkansas Civil War Confederate Units 4th Arkansas Infantry . Military service Evander McNair became colonel of the 4th Arkansas Infantry Regiment on August 17, 1861. He led his unit into battle first at the Battle of Wilson s Creek in southwest Missouri and later at the Battle of Pea Ridge . Daniel McGilvary and Mrs. Sophia McGilvary. He came to the United States to study, graduating from Davidson College Davidson College N.C. in 1884 and from Princeton University Master of Arts postgraduate North America A.M. in 1888. In 1891, he returned to northern Thailand to join his parents in the Laos Mission of the Presbyterian Church USA . Although assigned to translate the Bible into northern Thai, McGilvary was soon embroiled in a denominational controversy over biblical inerrancy. He resigned from the Laos Mission in 1894 and returned to the United States. For five years, he taught at the University of California where he received the degree of Ph.D. in 1897. Early life Law was born in Darlington, South Carolina . His grandfather and his two great grandfathers had fought in the American Revolutionary War under Francis Marion , the Swamp Fox guerrilla leader. He attended the South Carolina Military Academy now The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina The Citadel in 1856 and was a professor of history at Kings Mountain Military Academy from 1858 to 1860, when he moved to Alabama to form his own Military High School in Tuskegee, Alabama . ref Tagg, p. 227 Hewitt, p. 23. ref Civil War Immediately following Alabama s secession from the Union American Civil War Union , Law joined the Alabama Militia as a captain. In April 1861 he transferred to the Confederate States Army as a captain in the 4th Alabama Infantry, a unit he helped recruit from students at his high school. The 4th Alabama was also known as the Alabama Zouaves . The following month he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . At the First Battle of Bull Run he was in Brigadier General CSA Brig. Gen.
