Princess Eudoxia never married although, there were persistent rumors that she wished to marry a man of Bulgarian descent which was dynasticly unacceptable at that time. She devoted her life to Bulgaria and acted as first lady of the land until King Boris III married Princess Giovanna of Savoy . After 9 September 1944, Princess Eudoxia was arrested and tortured by the Communists however, she was released and allowed to flee the country with the rest of the royal family. Biography In 1691, during one of his visits to the German Quarter , young Peter I of Russia became enamoured of Anna Mons, the daughter of Dutch wine merchant Johann Mon. It is generally thought he was from Westfalia. Her younger brother was Willem Mons 1688 1724 , destined to be the Imperial Chamberlain to Catherine Ist and Matrena her sister who married Fedor Balk, Major General and Governor of Riga. Her niece was the infamous Natalia Lopukhina 1699 1763 later victim of the so called Lopukhina Affair in 1742. As his relations with the tsarina Eudoxia Lopukhina gradually worsened, Anna Mons took the place of his permanent and semi official mistress. The relationship lasted 12 years. After Peter divorced Lopukhina, Anna had ambitions of marrying Peter herself, but by 1703 she feared he had lost interest in her and took up a flirtation with the Prussian ambassador Keyserling to rekindle Peter s affections. Keyserling proposed marriage, provoking Peter to have Anna expelled from her estate and put under house arrest with her mother and sister. Peter later allowed the two of them to marry, which they did in 1711. Anna died three years later of tuberculosis consumption . ref name Massie In 1707, Peter I did marry again, to Marta Helena Skowro ska who dyed her hair black so she would not resemble Anna Mons. She later became Catherine I of Russia . Anna s younger brother, Willem Mons , became the Secretary and friends with Catherine. He was charged and executed for abusing his access to the Empress along with his sister Matrena, who was beaten and exiled to Tobolsk, Siberia, and her husband given permission to remarry. It is thought that it was Rtischev who instigated the revision of service books which led to the Raskol Great Schism of the Russian Orthodox Church . Some scholars also hold him responsible for the eventual downfall of Patriarch Nikon . During the great famine in Vologda 1650 , Rtischev sold much of his property, including clothes and house utensils, in order to raise funds for the famine stricken city. A cousin of Vasily Vasilyevich Galitzine , he was noted for his noble attempt to turn Russia into a constitutional monarchy . He was sent by Peter the Great in 1697 to Italy to learn military affairs in 1704 he was appointed to the command of an auxiliary corps in Poland against Charles XII of Sweden Charles XII from 1711 to 1718 he was governor of Belgorod . In 1718 he was appointed president of the newly erected collegium ministry Commerce Collegium and a senator. In May 1723 he was implicated in the disgrace of the vice chancellor Shafirov and was deprived of all his offices and dignities, which he only recovered through the mediation of the empress. After the death of Peter the Great, Galitzine became the recognized head of the old Conservative party which had never forgiven Peter for putting away Eudoxia Lopukhina Eudoxia and marrying the plebeian Catherine I of Russia Martha Skavronskaya . But the reformers, as represented by Alexander Menshikov and Peter Tolstoi , prevailed and Galitzine remained in the background till the fall of Menshikov, 1727. During the last years of Peter II of Russia Peter II 1728 1730 , Galitzine was the most prominent statesman in Russia and his high aristocracy aristocratic theories had full play. On the death of Peter II he conceived the idea of limiting the autocracy by subordinating it to the authority of the Supreme privy council , of which he was president. He drew up a Conditions Russia Conditions which Anna of Russia Anna of Courland , the newly elected Russian empress, was forced to sign at Jelgava Mittau before being permitted to proceed to St Petersburg .
