He made aliyah in 1927 and taught at the Ehad HaAm Gymnasium school gymnasium in Petah Tikva . In 1928 he married Miriam Levit Shamrot. Political activity Levanon was one of the founders of the General Zionists youth movement, and later one of its leaders. He also founded and headed the Civilian Housing organization. In 1936 he served as the chairman of the election committee in Tel Aviv and the secretary general of the General Zionists labor union. In 1951 he was elected to Tel Aviv s city council and served as the deputy mayor from 1952. Due to Israel Rokach s resignation and ministerial appointment, he was elected mayor by the city council on 13 April 1953. In 1955, Levanon was publicly re elected into office. Levanon was the main founder of the Tel Aviv University , which he helped advance even after his mayoral tenure, and one of its main streets was named after him following his death. As a youngster, he learned in Slabodka yeshiva Bnei Brak Yeshivas Slabodka in Bnei Brak and eventually made his way to Mir yeshiva Jerusalem Yeshivas Mir in Jerusalem , where he became a student of Rabbi Chaim Shmuelevitz . At the behest of Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel I Eliezer Yehuda Finkel , then the Rosh Yeshiva of Mir, Chaim Kamil became the Torah study partner of Rabbi Eliyahu Boruch Finkel and Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel Mir Nosson Tzvi Finkel , who himself eventually rose to the position of Rosh Yeshiva in Mir and forever regards Rabbi Kamil as his teacher. Eventually, Rabbi Chaim Kamil accepted the role of Rosh Yeshiva in Ofakim and along with Rabbi Shimshon Dovid Pincus , the communal Rabbi there, helped facilitate the growth of the Jewish community of Ofakim. Biography Chaim Egon Kiewe was born in the village Dlottowen Eastern Prussia in 1912. His parents Luis Kiewe and Johanna Toller, the only Jewish family in the village, owned an inn and a horse ranch. As a teenager he moved to Berlin, where he graduated high school and joined the Zionist youth movement HaHalutz. In 1934 he immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Na an. He painted as an autodidact in his free time. His first works are portraits of Kibbutz members, and Kibbutz landscapes. In the 1940s he was a member of the Hagana organisation and in the year 1947 he was arrested in wake of Operation Agatha Black Saturday . He was sent to Rafa Prison, where he sketched the life of the prisoners. In 1948, he was a company commander in the Givati Brigade, during the Israeli War of Independence. In the late 1940s he designed sets and costumes for plays, staged by the Na an studio.
