His father was Rainaldo, baron of Rocca d Evandro , and it is thought that his mother was a noble woman from the Gaetani family of Crown of Aragon Aragon . Ettore served as a page to Ferdinand I of Naples and later became a condottiero for Ferdinand II of Naples Ferdinand II . As such he fought against Charles VIII of France in 1493, during the First Italian War French invasion of Italy . He continued to serve Frederick IV of Naples Frederick IV against the kings of France and Spain, but after Frederick s defeat in 1501, he turned to serve Prospero Colonna against France and Spain. In 1503 he led thirteen Italian knights to victory over thirteen French in the Challenge of Barletta Disfida di Barletta . Later he served Ferdinand the Catholic , king of Spain, who made him count of Miglionico . Biography Ximenes initially embarked on literary studies but then took up sculpture and attended the courses at the Palermo Academy of Fine Arts. His training was completed in close contact with the Neapolitan school of Verism as a pupil of Domenico Morelli and Stanislao Lista at the Naples Academy from 1872 on. He also established a close relationship with Vincenzo Gemito . He returned to Palermo in 1874 and won a competition for a four year grant, which enabled him to study Renaissance sculpture in Florence, Italy Florence . He exhibited work in 1878 in Paris , where he came into contact with Auguste Rodin and Jean Baptiste Carpeaux .
