  1. Enteric coating

Unreferenced date October 2007 An enteric coating is a barrier applied to oral medication that controls the location in the digestive system , where it is absorbed. Enteric refers to the small intestine, therefore enteric coatings prevent release of medication before it reaches the small intestine . Most enteric coatings work by presenting a surface that is stable at the highly acidic pH found in the stomach, but breaks down rapidly at a less acidic relatively more Base chemistry basic pH. For example, they will not dissolve in the acidic juices of the stomach pH 3 , but they will in the alkaline pH 7 9 environment present in the small intestine. Materials used for enteric coatings include fatty acid s, wax es, shellac , plastic s, and plant fibers. Drugs that have an irritant effect on the stomach, such as aspirin , can be coated with a substance that will dissolve only in the small intestine. Likewise, certain groups of azole s esomeprazole , omeprazole , pan and all grouped azoles are acid unstable. For such types of drugs, enteric coating added to the formulation tends to avoid the stomach s acidic exposure, delivering them instead to a basic pH environment intestine s pH 5.5 and above where they do not degrade, and give their desired action. Recently, some companies have begun to utilize enteric coatings on fish oil omega 3 fatty acid s supplements. The coating prevents the fish oil capsules from being digested in the stomach, which has been known to cause a fishy gastroesophageal reflux reflux fish burps . Sometimes the abbreviation EC is added beside the name of the drug to indicate that it has an enteric coating. 1. Sulfoxide

Image Sulfoxide.svg right thumb 150px Sulfinyl group A sulfoxide is a chemical compound containing a sulfinyl functional group attached to two carbon atoms. Sulfoxides can be considered as oxidized thioether sulfides . The use of the alternative spelling sulphoxide is discouraged by IUPAC . An example of a sulfoxide occurring in nature is alliin . Nature of the bond Sulfoxides are generally represented with the structural formula R S O R , where R and R are organic groups. The bond between the sulfur and oxygen atoms differs from the conventional double bond between carbon and oxygen in, say, ketones. The S O interaction has an electrostatic aspect, resulting in significant Bond dipole moment dipolar character, with negative charge centered on oxygen. The bonding is similar to that in tertiary Phosphine oxide phosphine oxides , R sub 3 sub P O. Image Sulfoxide resonance.png 300px center Sulfoxide group A lone pair of electrons resides on the sulfur atom giving it tetrahedral molecular geometry as for sp carbon. When the two organic residues are dissimilar, the sulfur is a chirality chemistry chiral center , for example, methylphenylsulfoxide. Image Sulfoxide tetrahedral.png 135px center The energy required to invert this stereocenter is sufficiently high that sulfoxides are optically stable, that is, the rate of racemization is slow at room temperature. Chiral sulfoxides find application in certain drugs such as esomeprazole and Armodafinil , and they are also employed as chiral auxiliary chiral auxiliaries . ref Oxidation of sulfides to chiral sulfoxides using Schiff base vanadium IV complexes ngeles Gama, Luc a Z. It achieved notable success, reaching 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 2 in the United Kingdom . Background The song contains many references to drug use, with methylenedioxymethamphetamine purple pills , Goldenseal golden seals , and psychedelic mushroom Mushroom Mountain being examples of recreational drug use. The song was deemed inappropriate for play on many radio stations, and a radio edit was made removing most drug and sex references. The edit was called Purple Hills , and lines such as I ve been to mushroom mountain were altered to things such as I ve climbed the highest mountain, and I take a couple uppers was changed to I ve been so many places. The edit was the most played version on Top 40 radio, but a number of underground radio stations played the unedited single. The clean version mutes or replaces references of drugs, profanities, and sexual references. Most of Bizarre s verse is entirely changed because of the excessive sexual and drug content in it that rendered muting it pointless. The music video is in Purple Hills form.
