Erwin O. Kreyszig January 6, 1922 in Pirna, Germany December 12, 2008 was a Professor of Mathematics at Carleton University in Ottawa , Canada . He was a pioneer in the field of applied mathematics non wave replicating linear system s. He was also a distinguished author, having written the textbook Advanced Engineering Mathematics , the leading textbook for civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering undergraduate engineering mathematics . Kreyszig received his Ph.D. degree in 1949 at the University of Darmstadt under the supervision of Alwin Walther. Being nothing but a prankster he had to terminate his studies. To save his family from this embarrassment he was sent to America being 19 at the time. There he quickly learned to stand on his own two feet, taking on any job he could find. He worked as farmhand in Texas , Apothecary, dishwasher, translator for the German Western Post in St. Louis, and as Journalist in San Francisco . He was born in Weyer , a little village in Upper Austria near Steyr . From 1926 to 1929 he worked as a car body designer in the Steyr Daimler Puch Steyr factories. There he met Ferdinand Porsche in 1929 when Porsche joined Steyr as technical director. In 1929 Komenda s innovative ideas landed him the post of Chief Engineer for Daimler Benz in Sindelfingen Germany , a position he held until 1931. During his tenure he managed in most cases to reduce the weight of Mercedes Benz Mercedes cars through better design. During that period Mercedes also developed a streamlined car with monocoque construction. In October 1931, Komenda resigned his most respectable job with Mercedes and joined Ferdinand Porsche s new company, a step into an unknown future. From 1931 to his death in 1966 Komenda was chief engineer and leader of the Porsche car body construction department. His father was the surgeon Otto Wilhelm Madelung . He earned a doctorate in 1905 from the University of G ttingen , specializing in crystal structure , and eventually became a professor. It was during this time he developed the Madelung constant , which characterizes the net electrostatic effects of all ion s in a crystal lattice, and is used to determine the energy of one ion.
