  1. Rupes

Rupes is the Latin word for cliff . It is used in planetary geology to refer to escarpment s on other planet s, such as Mercury planet Mercury , and natural satellite moons , such as Moon Luna , Earth s natural satellite. How rupes are formed is, as of 2008, a matter of speculation. Compressional strain from the cooling of the crust of terrestrial planets and large scale displacement due to impacts are the two dominant theories ref cite web title APOD 21 January 1996 Mercury s Faults publisher APOD Astronomy Picture of the Day date 1996 01 21 url http www.sai.msu.su apod ap960121.html accessdate 2008 04 16 ref . 1. Rupes Recta

Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Rupes Recta.jpg thumb Taken with Olympus digital camera using 4.5 telescope. Since this is a telescope view, this image is inverted. Rupes Recta is a linear fault, or rille , on the Moon , in the southeastern part of the Mare Nubium at Lunar coords and quad cat 22.1 S 7.8 W . The name is Latin for Straight Fault , although it is more commonly called the Straight Wall. This is the most well known escarpment on the Moon, and is a popular target for amateur astronomers. When the sun illuminates the feature at an oblique angle at about day 8 of the Moon s orbit, the Rupes Recta casts a wide shadow that gives it the appearance of a steep cliff. The fault has a length of 110  km, a typical width of 2 3  km, and a height of 240 300 m. Thus although it appears to be a vertical cliff in the lunar surface, in actuality the grade of the slope is relatively shallow. To the west of this escarpment is the crater Birt crater Birt , which is about 10.5 miles in diameter. Also to the west is the Rima Birt rille . At the southern end is a group of hills often called the Stag s Horn Mountains , although this name is not officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union IAU . To the northeast is the crater Alpetragius crater Alpetragius , and to the east is Thebit crater Thebit . 1. Rupes Altai

Unreferenced date December 2009 Rupes Altai is an escarpment in the lunar surface that is located in the southeastern quadrant of the Moon s near side. It is named for the Altai Mountains in Asia . The selenographic coordinates of this feature are Lunar coords and quad cat 24.3 S 22.6 E , and it has a length of about 427  km. The southeastern end of the cliff terminates along the western edge of the crater Piccolomini crater Piccolomini . It then arcs irregularly towards the north, climbing to heights of nearly a kilometer. The northern end of the arc is an irregular region with no clearly defined terminus, where it brackets the prominent craters Theophilus crater Theophilus , Cyrillus crater Cyrillus , and Catharina crater Catharina . This cliff forms the southwestern rim of the Mare Nectaris Nectaris impact basin. This feature is difficult to locate during the full moon when the sunlight is nearly overhead.
