A young man is explaining to a police officer why an old man he was sitting with dropped dead. The man states that his father is a creator , and owns several planets. He was on a date with a girl whose father is also a creator. The date is an attempt by both fathers to unite their families. The titular hick arrives, and the man shows him a brochure that advertises his father s business. Aggravated, the man proudly proclaims his religious beliefs, but collapses when he discovers the man is the creator s son. He was born at Leeds in 1790 and trained at Fenton, Murray and Wood , the well known makers of steam engines, textile machines and other machinery. In 1810 Hick moved to Bolton as manager of Rothwell s Union Foundry. It later became known as Rothwell, Hick and Rothwell . It was a wooden, single seat, parasol wing aircraft. Only one was built. Design and development The Merlin, originally known as the Kestrel , was designed and built by W. E. Hick of the Newcastle upon Tyne Newcastle Glider Club. It took three years to complete, first flying on 2 February 1936 from the Club s Moat Law site. ref name Ellison It was a wooden single seat high performance glider with a parasol wing of three parts. The long outer panels were continuously tapered and the centre section had an uncovered strip above the fuselage , with the open cockpit not far below the underside of the wing.
