By the south the lake is bounded by the Cerros de Quim n mountains. The Ri ihuazo main Ri ihuazo The Ri ihue lake became famous after an event known as the Ri ihuazo , which threatened to destroy several towns, villages and cities in southern Chile. During the Great Chilean Earthquake a landslide near the Tralcan Mount dam med the Ri ihue Lake. As the water levels of Ri ihue rose more than 20 meters, the dam was in danger of breaking and flooding everything downstream, including the city of Valdivia city Valdivia . There were plans for evacuating the city, and many people left the city. All this ended when a large team of workers was able to open a channel for drainage in the landslide. Then the water levels of the lake sunk slowly to its normal levels. There is evidence that a similar landslide and earthquake happened in 1575 . The inflorescence is a large solitary Head botany flower head on an erect or leaning Peduncle botany peduncle which may reach a meter tall. The flower head has a base made up of three layers of pointed bract phyllaries coated in gray or silvery hairs. The head has a fringe of many yellow ray florets each up to 5 centimeters long. The fruit is an achene about a centimeter long with a small Pappus flower structure pappus .
