History The region took its name first in the early 16th century, because it was by the Treaty of Pavia 1329 Treaty of Pavia one of the main portions of the territory of the Wittelsbach Elector Palatine , who also ruled over the Electoral Palatinate Lower Palatinate in the Rhineland, now normally just called the Palatinate, or Pfalz. The capital of the Upper Palatinate was Amberg . Cadet branches of the Wittelsbach also ruled over smaller territories in Neuburg and Sulzbach . Although the Lower Palatinate was restored to Frederick s son by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the Upper Palatinate remained under the Elector of Bavaria, and has remained a part of Bavaria ever since. A different colour, palatinate blue, is the colour of County Durham . The highest award is the Full Palatinate , given to those who have represented their country whilst at University and have, at the same time, also made a significant contribution to their club. Half Palatinate awards are given to those who have either competed at a very high level, but not made a significant contribution to their club, or held a position of responsibility but lacked the necessary standard of sporting ability. The awarding of Palatinates is decided by a committee which is appointed each year. Honorary Palatinate awards recognise the success of former Durham students who have gone on to greater things within the field of sport. 1. Henry of the Palatinate

Henry of Bavaria or Henry of the Palatinate Heidelberg , 15 February 1487 &ndash Ladenburg , 3 January 1552 was bishop of Bishopric of Utrecht Utrecht from 1524 to 1529, bishop of Bishopric of Worms Worms from 1523 to 1552 and bishop of Bishopric of Freising Freising from 1541 to 1552. Hendrik descended from the house of Wittelsbach and was a son of Philip, Elector Palatine . He was Canon priest canon in Cologne before he was, at the recommendation of the Archbishop of Cologne, elected by the Chapter religion chapters and bourgeoisie burghers of Utrecht. But he lacked the support of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Charles, Duke of Guelders , who made life difficult for him. In the bishopric, Henry faced a faction struggle. He entertained the idea of building a fort inside the city of Utrecht to keep the citizens in check. This idea would later be realised by Charles V as the Vredenburg castle Vredenburg . When the resistance of the Utrecht citizens escalated to the point where they invited troops from Guelders to occupy the city, Henry had no choice but to ask the Habsburg ers for help. The Habsburgers quickly restored order, but in return the bishop was forced to relinquish all the lands controlled by the bishopric. The relinquishment was secured in the tractaat van Schoonhoven on 15 November 1527, and on 21 October 1528 the bishop swore fealty to Charles V. This was the end of the Bishopric of Utrecht as a territorial power.
