Formation The line from Elderslie to Bridge of Weir was built originally as the Bridge of Weir Railway , which had opened to passengers in 1864 between Johnstone and Bridge of Weir. On 1 August 1865 it was vested in the Glasgow and South Western Railway and closed on 18 May 1869 reopening between Elderslie and Bridge of Weir, on 23 December 1869, as part of the Elderslie to Bridge of Weir branch. Dalry and North Johnstone Line The Dalry and North Johnstone Line also known as the Lochwinnoch Loop Line or Kilbarchan Loop Line was a branch of the Glasgow and South Western Railway G&SWR in Renfrewshire and Ayrshire , Scotland, connecting the stations in Elderslie and Dalry, North Ayrshire Dalry via a route running parallel to the existing line built by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway . This provided additional line capacity for Ayrshire Coast and Kilmarnock services. The loop line was used for passenger services until the mid 1960s, when it was closed by the Beeching Axe . Shields Junction Shields Junction is the name given to the busy railway junction in the Shields Road area of Glasgow , Scotland . The junction is heavily used by both passenger and freight services running on three separate railway lines out of Glasgow Central railway station Glasgow Central station . Passenger services operated by First ScotRail run to Stnlnk Paisley Canal , Ayr , Largs , Ardrossan , Gourock and Wemyss Bay as well as the less frequent Stranraer service. Freight operations through the junction are usually from either Elderslie , Ayr Falkland Yard or Hunterston Terminal . Shields Junction is situated beside Shields Depot, which along with Corkerhill Depot are the main railway depots used by SPT on the south west side of Glasgow . Born in Elderslie , he was educated at Paisley Grammar School , St Edmund Hall, Oxford , and the Universities of University of Glasgow Glasgow and University of Edinburgh Edinburgh . He served in the Fleet Air Arm from 1942 to 1946. He was member of Parliament for Edinburgh Pentlands UK Parliament constituency Edinburgh Pentlands between October 1964 and February 1974. Between 1970 and 1974 he held the title of Lord Advocate , having briefly been Solicitor General for Scotland from April to October 1964.
