  1. Eifel Transmitter

The Eifel Transmitter lang de Sender Eifel is an FM and TV transmission facility for the German broadcasting company of SWR and is located on the Scharteberg near Kirchweiler , Germany . Until 1985, the Scharteberg transmitter used a 160 metre tall guyed mast. However this mast did not allow good reception in deep valleys, so in 1985 a new, 302 metre tall, guyed, steel framework mast was built, becoming the tallest structure of Rhineland Palatinate . The elements of this mast were built by the firm of Hein, Lehmann AG, whilst construction work was carried out by BBS AG, Ludwigshafen. The first 20 metres of the mast were built using a small crane. The mast elements in heights between 20 and 100 metres were mounted by the aid of a car crane, while for the sections above a derrick crane was used. The new mast of Scharteberg transmitter consists of a 288 metre tall, guyed, lattice, steel structure with a square cross section, a side length of 2.1 metres and a 14 metre long GFK cylinder on top for the UHF antenna. The total weight of the structure is 204 tons. The mast is guyed at 4 levels, 57, 123, 195 and 273 metres above ground. It is equipped with an elevator which runs up to a height of 281 metres. For aircraft warning 20 red neon lamps and two blinking lights with 1000 watt lamps are installed. 1. Schneifel

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 File Schneifel.jpg thumb The rather unassuming, long ridge of the Schneifel viewed from the Wei er Stein Eifel Wei er Stein The Schneifel is a range of low mountains in the western part of the Eifel in Germany , near the Belgian border. It runs from Brandscheid Eifel Brandscheid near Pr m in a northeasterly direction to Ormont . The name Schneifel has nothing to do with the German language German words Schnee snow and Eifel . It is derived from the former dialect of this region and means something like Schneise swathe . This swathe ran over the mountains. The term was Germanised during the Prussian era and the term Schnee Eifel Snow Eifel was born, albeit referring to a larger area. Winters in this low mountainous region are unusually cold and snowy for western and parts of central Europe and snow lies here for longer than anywhere else in the Eifel. As a result, the winter sports season is longer here than in the surrounding region. The highest point of the Schneifel is the 697.3 meter Schwarze Mann Black Man , which is also the third highest point of the Eifel range after the Hohe Acht and the Erresberg Ernstberg . There is a winter sports area on the Schwarze Mann with the same name. The Schneifel is covered along its entire length by the ruins of bunker s which formed part of the Siegfried Line . On the heights of the Schneifel is the former USA US radar station, Pr m Air Station, and the Schnee Eifel transmission tower for terrestrial TV and VHF which, with a height of 224  m is clearly visible for miles.
