Early Christian Writings title Greek Gospel of the Egyptians date 120 150 attribution sources not known manuscripts none audience Egyptian Churches location Alexandria future Clement of Alexandria theme Return to an androgynous state The Greek Gospel of the Egyptians is a Gnostic religious text. Its title is adopted from its opening line. Dating The suppressed Greek Gospel of the Egyptians, which is quite distinct from the later, wholly Gnostic Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians , perhaps written in the second quarter of the 2nd century, was already cited in Clement of Alexandria s miscellany, the Stromata , where quotations give us many of the brief excerpts that are all that remain it was also mentioned by Hippolytus writer Hippolytus , who alludes to these various changes of the soul, set forth in the Gospel entitled according to the Egyptians and connects the Gospel of the Egyptians with the Gnostic Naassenes Naassene sect. Later, that 4th century collector of heresy heresies , Epiphanius of Salamis , asserts that the Sabellianism Sabellians made use of this gospel though it is unlikely that he had any firsthand information about Sabellius, who taught in Rome in the mid 2nd century, his connection of the gospel with Sabellius would confirm a date early in the 2nd century, whereas the euphemism, the Word logos , as an appellation of the Saviour, which appears in the gospel, betokens the influence of the Gospel of John , thus suggesting a date ca 120 &ndash 150. No text for it exists outside of these testimonies. Content From these few fragments, it is unknown how much more extensive ... it constitutes a version of some other known text. Migration history Small numbers of Egyptians moved to the UK in the 1930s and 1940s in order to study. More significant numbers arrived in the 1950s, after Gamal Abdel Nasser President Nasser came to power in Egypt. The majority of these migrants were middle class Muslims unhappy with the coup. The 1960s saw only limited migration, due to prohibitions on exit visas from Nasser s Egypt. Fear of religious intolerance in the 1970s resulted in further migration, this time largely of Copts , although the numbers migrating to the UK were small compared to Canada and Australia . With Egypt s economic liberalisation under Anwar El Sadat President Sadat in the 1970s, labour migration to the UK increased and so did the flow of Egyptians moving to the UK for higher education. Many students stayed in Britain after finishing their studies. During this time, many Egyptian businessmen migrated to the UK to establish businesses. ref cite book url http dro.dur.ac.uk 116 1 57CMEIS.pdf title The Egyptians of Britain A migrant community in transition publisher University of Durham location Durham date May 1997 last Karmi first Ghada series Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Occasional Paper volume 57 ref Demographics According to the 2001 UK Census some 24,700 Egyptian born people were present in the UK. ref name OECD cite web url http www.oecd.org dataoecd 18 23 34792376.xls title Country ... for 95 per cent confidence interval s. ref List of Egyptians in the United Kingdom Mohamed Al Fayed ... more details
