  1. Eglon (king)

Eglon was the king of Moab who suppressed Israel in the time of the Judges. He was the head of the confederacy of Moab, Ammon and Amalek in their assault. One day, Ehud came presenting a customary tribute and tricked Eglon and stabbed him with his sword, but when Ehud attempted to draw the sword back out, the obese king s excess fat prevented its retrieval. Traditionally, it is said that some form of feces or waste issued from Eglon s stomach wound in this incident. His servants, believing he was relieving himself, left him be. Rabbis in the Talmud ic tradition claimed that Ruth biblical figure Ruth was Eglon s daughter. According to this tradition, Eglon was rewarded for rising out of respect when Ehud mentioned the Israelite God by having King David as a descendant. This can also be seen as an attempt to provide a royal lineage to David. There is, however, no basis in the actual verses for such an assertion. The Talmud also describes Eglon as the grandson of Balak. b. Sanhedrin 105b His descendants According to a legend in a midrash, the two Moabite women from the Book of Ruth Orpah and Ruth biblical figure Ruth , were sisters, and both were daughters of the Moabite king Eglon Ruth R. ii. 9 . According to this same midrash Eglon was a son of Balak , the king of Moab introduced in bibleverse Numbers 22 HE . Possible survival of the name Some historical theories link the King s name with that of the present day town of Ajloun in Jordan , though the precise derivation is obscure. 1. Quarries (biblical)

Orphan date February 2009 Quarries 1. The Royal Quarries see Zedekiah s Cave not found in Scripture is the name given to the vast caverns stretching far underneath the northern hill, Bezetha, on which Jerusalem is built. Out of these mammoth caverns stones, a hard limestone, have been quarried in ancient times for the buildings in the city, and for the temples of Solomon, Zerubbabel, and Herod. Huge blocks of stone are still found in these caves bearing the marks of pick and chisel. The general appearance of the whole suggests to the explorer the idea that the Phoenician quarrymen have just suspended their work. The supposition that the polished blocks of stone for Solomon s temple were sent by Hiram I Hiram from Lebanon or Tyre Lebanon Tyre is not supported by any evidence comp. 1 Kings 5 8 . Hiram sent masons and stone squarers to Jerusalem to assist Solomon s workmen in their great undertaking, but did not send stones to Jerusalem, where, indeed, they were not needed, as these royal quarries abundantly testify. 2. 1. Adonizedek

Adonizedek variously transliterated as Adoni zedec or Adoni Zedek in Hebrew language Hebrew , Adoni Tzedek was, according to the Book of Joshua , king of Jerusalem at the time of the Israelite invasion of Canaan bibleverse Joshua 10 1 3 NIV . His name means my lord is righteousness in Hebrew. Adonizedek led a coalition of five of the neighboring Amorite rulers Hoham king of Hebron , and unto Piram king of Jarmuth , and unto Japhia king of Lachish , and unto Debir king of Eglon to resist the invasion, but the allies were defeated at Gibeon ancient city Gibeon , and suffered at Beth horon , not only from their pursuers, but also from a great hail storm. The five allied kings took refuge in a cave at Makkedah and were imprisoned there until after the battle, when Joshua commanded that they be brought before him whereupon they were brought out, humiliated, and put to death. According to the Midrash , the name Adoni zedek is translated as Master of Zedek that is, of Jerusalem, the city of righteousness Genesis Rabbah xliii. 6 . Identification with Abdi Heba The author of the article for the Easton s Bible Dictionary states that amongst the Amarna letters are some letters from Adonizedek to the Pharaoh of Egypt , which add to the history recorded in Josh. 10. However, the only king of Jerusalem mentioned in this archive is one Abdi Heba whose name translates as servant of Heba , who is said to have succeeded Lab ayu . Six of his letters to the king of Egypt EA 285 290 are included in the Amarna letters , and he is mentioned in a seventh EA 280 . Perhaps the Dictionary author saw how Abdi Heba complained of the raids by the Habiru , who at the time were unquestioningly identified with the Hebrews , and forced the identification.
