Ceolwald may have been King of Mercia circa 716. King Ceolred of Mercia , a grandson of Penda died in 716 of a fit. Most Mercian king lists have Ceolred succeeded by thelbald of Mercia thelbald , who was not a descendant of Penda. However, one version of the Worcester Cathedral lists has Ceolred succeeded by Ceolwald. 1. Ecgfrith of Mercia

Ecgfrith died December 796 was a List of monarchs of Mercia King of Mercia who briefly ruled in the year 796. He was the son and heir of King Offa of Mercia and his wife Cynethryth . In 787, Offa had Ecgfrith crowned as co ruler. He succeeded his father in July 796, but despite Offa s efforts to secure his son s succession, it is recorded that Ecgfrith ruled for only 141 days. Since Offa died either on July 26 or July 29, this would mean that Ecgfrith died either on December 14 or December 17. Offa thus appears to have moved to eliminate dynastic rivals to the succession of his son. According to a contemporary letter from Alcuin of York , an English deacon and scholar who spent over a decade at Charlemagne s court as one of his chief advisors, ref name BEASE 24 Lapidge, Alcuin of York , in Lapidge et al., Encyclopaedia of Anglo Saxon England , p.  24. ref however, the vengeance of the blood shed by the father has reached the son . Alcuin adds, This was not a strengthening of the kingdom, but its ruin. ref name EHD 786 Letter of Alcuin to Mercian ealdorman Osbert, tr. in Whitelock, English Historical Documents , p.  787 ref The surviving sources do not record whether Ecgfrith died of natural causes or was assassinated, though Alcuin s letter seems to imply the latter. 1. Beornwulf of Mercia

Beornwulf died 825 was List of monarchs of Mercia King of Mercia now the English Midlands Midlands of England from 823 to 825. His short reign saw the collapse of the Mercian Supremacy Mercia s supremacy over the kingdoms of the Anglo Saxon England Anglo Saxon Heptarchy . Beornwulf s ancestry is practically unknown. His father was a Mercian nobleman, ealdorman Beorhtweald died 796 . A man named Beornwulf is mentioned as having witnessed a charter of King Coenwulf of Mercia Coenwulf in 812 and another of King Ceolwulf I of Mercia Ceolwulf in 823, but his position on each of these charters suggests he was not of an exceptionally high rank. ref Frank Stenton, Anglo Saxon England 1943, 1971, 1998 Oxford paperback , page 231, note 1. ref Ceolwulf I was overthrown in 823, and Beornwulf became king. Kingdom of Powys Powys was conquered by the Mercians at about this time, but it is unclear which of the two kings was ruling when it occurred. It has been argued that the known record suggests Beornwulf was more vigorous and likely to wage such a campaign than Ceolwulf, and that the conquest of Powys may have therefore been accomplished by Beornwulf at the beginning of his rule. ref name Kirby D. However these dates can only be the result of intelligent guesswork due to the lack of specific records. ref 593 was the first monarch of Mercia , reigning from 584 to 593. Creoda is recorded as having been the son of Cynewald , the grandson of Cnebba , and the great grandson of Icel person Icel consequently, members of the Mercian royal line were known as Iclinga s. Although this suggests that Creoda was only a fourth generation descendant of the first Angles in England , the sources nevertheless record him as having been the first ruler of the Kingdom of Mercia. One explanation for this is that the Mercians had initially settled further east and only moved into the area of what became known as Mercia in the time of Creoda. Like most of the early Anglo Saxons Anglo Saxon kings, very little is known about his life. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle records his death in the year 593. 1. Ælfflæd of Mercia

Other people2 lffl d lffl d was a daughter of Offa of Mercia and Cynethryth . She may have witnessed a Anglo Saxon Charters charter with her father, mother, and brother Ecgfrith of Mercia Ecgfrith in the 770s, and again in 787 with her mother, father, brother, and two sisters here she is described as virgo &mdash unmarried. It is possible that she was the daughter of Offa whose proposed marriage to Charles the Younger, son of Charlemagne Charles the Younger caused a dispute between Charlemagne and Offa in around 789&ndash 790. In 792 she married thelred I of Northumbria at Catterick, North Yorkshire Catterick . Here she is described as queen , which has suggested to some historians that she had been previously married, and to a king, perhaps to one of thelred s predecessors.
