He attended the University of Maine for two years before transferring to M.I.T. and received a S.B. degree electrical engineering in 1922. He received an Master of Arts postgraduate M.A. degree from Columbia University in 1925. Although interested primarily in a communications circuit theory and the transmission of data at high speeds over telephone lines, Edward L. Norton is best remembered for development of the dual of Thevenin s equivalent circuit, currently referred to as Norton s equivalent Circuit. In fact, Norton and his associates at AT&T in the early 1920s are recognized as some of the first to perform pioneering work applying Thevenin s equivalent circuit and who referred to this concept simply as Th venin s theorem . In 1926, he proposed the equivalent circuit using a current source and parallel ..., he held nineteen patents on his work. Norton died on January 28, 1983 in Chatham, New Jersey . He was educated at Charterhouse School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich , and then joined artillery units in British Raj India and served in World War I . He had been introduced to mountain climbing at the home in the Alps of his grandfather, Alfred Wills . His experience led to joining the British Mount Everest expeditions in 1922 and 1924, and reached high elevations both years. His 8570m height reached on the grand couloir route was a World altitude record mountaineering world altitude record which stood for nearly 30 years, only being surpassed during the unsuccessful Swiss expedition of 1952. In 1924, he took over leadership of the expedition when General Charles Granville Bruce fell ill, and Norton was praised for handling affairs in the aftermath of the disappearance of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine mountaineer Andrew Irvine . He served at Staff Colleges in India and England, and commanded the Royal Artillery and later the Madras District in the 1930s.   1. Frances Norton, Lady Norton

    Frances Norton, Lady Norton 1644 1731 was an English people English religious poet and prose writer who primarily wrote about grief . She was born in Oxford and married Sir George Norton in 1672. This George Norton was the son of the Sir George Norton who hid Charles II of England Charles II at the time of the regicide of Charles I. The couple had three children, but only one, Grace, survived infancy. Grace Norton died in 1697 at the age of twenty one, and Frances Norton went into a deep state of grief. She published a collection of Grace s own writings, Reliquae Gethinianae , in 1699 in literature 1699 , and in 1705 she wrote two tracts on grieving and consolation. These were The Applause of Virtue and Memento mori, or, Meditations on Death, which were sold together in a quarto . They were dedicated to two women who had helped Lady Norton in her grief who had themselves experienced a recent loss. The books are pious and collect together consoling thoughts from Christianity Christian , Classical, and philosophical literature. In 1714, she produced A miscellany of poems, compos d, and work d with a needle, on the backs and seats &c. of several chairs and stools. According to near contemporaries, Frances Norton did a great deal of needlepoint work on furniture in Abbots Leigh where the Norton estate was . She composed her own short poems, almost always with a pious theme, for such embroidery. In 1715, her husband died. She married his cousin, Colonel Ambrose Norton, in 1718, and, when he died, married a man named William Jones in 1724.
