Born in Prussia , White immigrated to the United States in 1857 with his mother, who settled on a farm in Keokuk County, Iowa . When the American Civil War began in 1861, he joined the 8th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment , but as a seventeen year old, he was rejected on account of age. In February 1962, after his eighteenth birthday, he enlisted in the 13th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment . He was mustered out in August 1865, after the war s end, and returned to Keokuk County and engaged in agricultural pursuits and stock raising. In 1890, White received the Democratic nomination to run against incumbent Republican Congressman John F. Lacey for the U.S. House seat in Iowa s 6th congressional district. A protectionist measure known as the McKinley tariff had been approved by a Republican controlled Congress and signed by a Republican president, but was extremely unpopular, especially in rural areas such as the 6th district, where it was blamed for making the agricultural economy worse.     Edward George White 1910 1994 was a United Kingdom British composer of light music whose compositions including Runaway Rocking Horse 1946 , Paris Interlude 1952 , Puffin Billy 1952 and Telegoons 1963 became familiar as radio and television theme tunes. White was born in London , and was largely self taught. He became a violinist in a trio and various dance bands, performing also on saxophone and clarinet. He became known as an arranger of music and, after service in the Royal Air Force RAF during World War II , he ran a ballroom orchestra at the Grand Spa Hotel in Bristol . Puffin Billy Puffin Billy is perhaps his most familiar composition, especially in the original recording by the Melodi Light Orchestra . The piece was inspired by an old steam locomotive called Puffing Billy , not the locomotive in the Science Museum London London Science Museum seen by the composer while on holiday on the Isle of Wight . The piece was used as the signature tune for the BBC Light Programme BBC Light Programme s Children s Favourites , a radio request programme, from 1952 to 1966. In the United States it was used for an even longer period of time 1955 1974 as the theme music to Captain Kangaroo on the CBS TV network. When a new theme song for Captain Kangaroo was used as Good Morning, Captain , a portion of the Puffing Billy theme was used, played by strings, so that the theme trademark could live on through the next generations. In 1957 permission was granted for Mary Rodgers to write lyrics to the tune and the vocal version was given the title Captain Kangaroo . From 1915 until his retirement in 1930, he was a teacher at the University School for Boys in Baltimore. He wrote a number of historical fiction historical novels , including The Unwilling Vestal 1918 , Andivius Hedulio 1921 and Helen 1926 but he is best remembered as a fantasy fiction fantasist , for stories such as The House of Nightmare and Lukundoo These short horror stories were based on his own nightmares. Two collections of his short fiction were published in his lifetime, The Song of the Sirens 1919 and Lukundoo and Other Stories 1927 . He died by his own hand on March 30, 1934, seven years to the day after the death of his wife, Agnes Gerry. His last book, Matrimony 1932 was a memoir of his happy marriage to her.
