    Edward H. Thompson 1879 1949 was born in Cumbria and went against the wishes of his parents to become a painter. In his lifetime he painted as many as ten thousand paintings and most of them of the Lake District . Known as Ted, he had an interest in painting from an early age when he spotted someone painting and thought he could do better than that. He eventually became a full time artist He also painted picture postcards for Valentine s of Dundee . In the 1940s Valentines reproduced the pictures in the form of booklets and also calendars, Ted s last work for Valentines appears to have been a series of idealised country cottages, in 1949 for a calendar.     for the American politician Ed Schafer Edward Hetzel Schafer , August 23, 1913 February 9, 1991 was a leading historian of Tang Dynasty China . He wrote ground breaking works such as The Golden Peaches of Samarkand A study of Tang exotics ref Schafer, 1985 originally published 1963 ref and The Vermilion Bird T ang images of the South . Schafer wrote his Ph.D. dissertation in the then entitled, Department of Oriental Languages of the University of California, Berkeley in 1947. He remained at Berkeley until his retirement in 1984. From 1969 until 1984 he held the Agassiz Professorship of Oriental Languages and Literature. Professor Edward Schafer was a pioneer in the study of medieval Chinese civilization and was particularly well known for his work on the material culture of the Tang Dynasty. He is also known within Chinese Studies for his uncompromising belief in the importance of language skills and learning and his differing approach on this subject to John King Fairbank . Edward Simpson born 1922 was introduced to the thinking of mathematical statistics as a cryptanalyst at Bletchley Park 1942 45 . He wrote the paper The Interpretation of Interaction in Contingency Tables while a postgraduate student at Cambridge in 1946 with Maurice Bartlett as his tutor and published it in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society in 1951 at Bartlett s request because Bartlett wanted to refer to it. The Paradox is widely used in mathematical statistics teaching to illustrate the care statisticians need to take when interpreting data. It figured in a 2009 episode of the popular U.S. TV crime solving series Numb3rs . Simpson entered the British civil service civil service administrative class in the Ministry of Education in 1947 and subsequently worked also in the Treasury, the Commonwealth Education Liaison Unit, as Private Secretary to Lord Hailsham as Lord President of the Council and Lord Privy Seal , and in the Civil Service Department. He was a Commonwealth Fund Fellow Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow in the USA 1956 57 .     Unreferenced date September 2010 Edward H. Harlow born 15 December 1899 31 August 2002 was the last Canadian sailor in WWI, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1917 but never saw action. In 1917 he was a survivor of the huge ammunition ship explosion in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a disaster that killed 1,500 people and injured nearly 2,000 more. After he was discharged he immigrated to the United States and moved to San Francisco in 1925. He died on 31 August 2002, he was 102. He was buried on September 6, 2002 at the Royal Canadian Legion plot at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Colma.
