He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1826, commencing practice in Colebrook, New Hampshire . He moved to Claremont, New Hampshire , in 1833 and assumed editorial management of the New Hampshire Argus . He moved to Newport, New Hampshire Newport in 1834 and united the Argus with the Spectator of that place, continuing as editor for several years. He was commissioned as adjutant in the State militia in 1837 and as brigade inspector in 1838. Burke was elected as a Democratic Party United States Democrat to the Twenty sixth, Twenty seventh, and Twenty eighth Congresses March 4, 1839 March 3, 1845 . Early life Fairfield was descended from a France Frenchman by the name of Beauchamp, at some point the name was anglicised to Fairfield. He was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia Parkersburg , Virginia now West Virginia and his family to Troy, Ohio when he was a young boy. He received an early education at Denison University of Granville, Ohio Granville and in 1837 at Marietta College of Marietta, Ohio Marietta and graduated from Oberlin College of Oberlin, Ohio Oberlin in 1842 where he had become a tutor. He spent two years as a Christian minister in New Hampshire , and two in Boston as pastor of the Ruggles Street Baptist Church. He married his first wife, Lucia Ann Jennison, daughter of Dr. Charles Jennison and Betsy Mahan, on August 27, 1845 and had three children together. Then, in 1848, he became President of the Michigan Central College , renamed Hillsdale College in 1853, and remained in this office until 1869.
