It is named after French physicist Edme Mariotte 1620 1684 . A picture of a bottle with a gas inlet is shown in the works of Mariotte, ref uvres de Mariotte 2 volumes, 1717 . R dition J. It further misses a siphon or an outlet for the liquid. Invention The design was first reported by McCarthy 1934 . ref McCarthy, E.L., 1934. Mariotte s Bottle. Science, 80 100. ref As shown in the diagram, a stoppered reservoir is supplied with an air inlet and a siphon . The pressure at the bottom of the air inlet is always the same as the pressure outside the reservoir, i.e. the atmospheric pressure . If it were greater, air would not enter. If the entrance to the siphon is at the same depth, then it will always supply the water at atmospheric pressure and will deliver a flow under constant head height, regardless of the changing water level within the reservoir. This apparatus has many variations in design and has been used extensively when a constant water pressure is needed, e.g. supplying water at constant head for measuring Infiltration hydrology water infiltration into soil or supplying the mobile phase in chromatography . The drawback of the design is that it is sensitive for gas inlet leakage and that during operation liquid cannot be added, since it would change the pressure control. Accurate control is nowadays provided by electronic devices. See also Infiltrometer References refs Category Soil physics de Mariottesche Flasche nl Fles van Mariotte ja ...   more details

  1. Jean Pecquet

Jean Pecquet 1622, Dieppe, Seine Maritime 1674 was a French scientist. He studied the expansion of air, wrote on psychology , and is also known for investigating the thoracic duct . Furthermore, he studied the nature of vision. Life He studied medicine at Montpelier, where he made the important discovery of the course of the lacteal vessels, including the Cisterna chyli receptaculum chyli , or reservoir of Pecquet, as it is sometimes called, and the termination of the principal lacteal vessel, the thoracic duct, into the left subclavian vein. ref New International Encyclopedia ref He dissected the eye and measured its dimensions. Contrary to Edme Mariotte , he maintained that the retina, not the choroid, was the principal organ of vision. He wrote Experimenta Nova Anatomica Paris, 1651 English translation, as New Anatomical Experiments , 1653 De Circulatione Sanguinis et Chyli Motu 1653 De Thoracicis Lacteis 1653 Terms Pecquet, cistern of, reservoir of &mdash The receptaculum chyli. ref Dorland s Medical Dictionary ref References Reflist Lewis, Sarah Janvier.
