    Methodius III , called Moronis or Maronis lang el , was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 1668 1671. Descended from Crete , he served at the Church of the Theotokos of Chrysopigi in Galata . In 1646 he was elected Metropolitan of Perinthus Heraclea , and on 5 January 1668 he was elected Ecumenical Patriarch , succeeding Patriarch Clement. But because former Patriarch Parthenius was hostile towards him, he was forced to resign in March 1671 and to become a monk in the Nea Moni of Chios and after that in the Strofades Monastery in Zakynthos . In 1677 he went to Venice and became commissioner in the orthodox San Giorgio dei Greci Church of Saint George which served the local Greek speaking community, until 1679 when he died. He was born in Adrianople and died in Constantinople . Chosen by the emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus as patriarch, he opposed the reunion of the Greek and Roman Churches and introduced an ecclesiasticl reform that evoked opposition within the clergy. He resigned in 1293 and was restored in 1303 with popular support. The pro Union clerical faction forced him into retirement in early 1310.     Basil I , surnamed Scamandrenus , ref from Scamandros Monastery , which he founded ref was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 970 to 974. Before his election as Patriarch, he was a monk in Olympus of Syria and continued his monastic life after his election. As a Patriarch he was accused as a conspirator against the Emperor and as a violator of holy rules, but he refused to appear in front of a royal court. He was exiled and went to Scamandrus Monastery, where he died. During his patriarchate, the so called Tragos , the first Charter of the monastical state of Mount Athos , was written and ratified. It was named after the animal whose skin was used for the parchment on which the text was written, namely a male goat.
