The Domus Conversorum House of the Converts was a building and institution in London for Jew s who had converted to Christianity . It provided a communal home and low wages. It was needed because all Jews who converted to Christianity forfeited all their possessions. http books.google.com books?id rD7KpxEhRu8C&pg PA100&lpg PA100&dq 22domus conversorum 22&source bl&ots 3TOA6X1yQF&sig app1v7 1yW9plENXVddHpWqdTrk&hl en&ei nkgCSqC5MYXuMrLZpOQH&sa X&oi book result&ct result&resnum 7 It was established in 1253 by Henry III of England Henry III . With the History of the Jews in England The Expulsion expulsion of the Jews by Edward I of England Edward I in 1290, it became the only way for Jews to remain in the country. At that stage there were about eighty residents. By 1356, the last one of these died. Between 1331 to 1608, 48 converts were admitted. The warden was also Master of the Rolls . The building was in Chancery Lane . No records exist after 1609, but, in 1891, the post of chaplain was abolished by Act of Parliament and the location, which had been used to store legal archives, became the Public Record Office . Domus Conversorum was sometimes used also to describe the living quarters of lay brother s in monastery monasteries . 1. Domus Transitoria

The Domus Transitoria was Roman Emperor Nero s palace on Palatine Hill destroyed by the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD. Marble and other parts salvaged from the ruins later became part of the Domus Aurea , the Roman Emperor s official residence. The palace was intended to connect all of the possessions of the imperial house with Palatine. The site was excavated in 1721, where considerable damage was done during the excavations. The lower floors contained sunken gardens, two pavilions, a nymph um, and an art gallery. Beyond these rooms is a very large latrine, which has been wrongly thought to be the machinery chamber of a hydraulic lift, which would, it is supposed, have worked in a shaft over 35 metres 120 feet deep found not far off. ref cite web url http penelope.uchicago.edu Thayer E Gazetteer Places Europe Italy Lazio Roma Rome Texts PLATOP Domus Transitoria.html title A Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome author Samuel Ball Platner publisher Oxford University Press date 1929 accessdate 2009 07 18 ref References reflist Category Roman Empire Category Ancient Roman architecture Ancient Rome stub de Domus Transitoria fr Domus transitoria it Domus Transitoria nl Domus Transitoria sv Domus Transitoria ...   more details

Image Domus Dei Oct 2007.jpg thumb right 250px Domus Dei, October 2007. Image Domus Dei.JPG thumb right 250px Domus Dei, October 2008. Domus Dei Hospital of Saint Nicholas was an almshouse and hospice established in 1212 in Portsmouth , Hampshire , UK by Pierre des Roches , Bishop of Winchester, Hampshire Winchester . It is now also known as the Royal Garrison Church and is an English Heritage property and a listed Ancient Monument. History It had a regular staff of 13 consisting of a Master who held overall responsibility for 6 nuns and 6 monks. In 1450 an unpopular advisor to the king, Bishop Adam Moleyns of Chichester was conducting a service at the chapel of Domus Dei when a number of naval seamen resentful of being only partially paid and only provided with limited provisions burst in to the church, dragged out the bishop and murdered him. As a result of this the entire town of Portsmouth was placed under the Greater Excommunication , an interdict which lasted until 1508, removed at the request of Bishop Fox of Winchester, Hampshire Winchester . One of the conditions for the removal of the interdict included the building of a chantry chapel next to the hospital. In 1540, like other religious buildings, it was seized by King Henry VIII of England Henry VIII and until 1560 was used as an Armoury military armory . After 1560 it became the home of the local military governor. Throughout this time the chapel attached to the hospital remained in use and in 1662 it hosted the wedding of King Charles II of England Charles II and Princess Catherine of Braganza . Towards the end of the 17th century it fell into disrepair until it was restored in 1767 to become the Garrison church. On 10 January 1941 the buildings of Domus Dei were partially destroyed in an attack by Germany German bombers. The Garrison church remains, albeit roofless, as a popular tourist attraction. It was also used as the set for Horatio Hornblower s wedding in Hornblower Duty, 2003.
