A series of earthquakes destroy the Pacific coast of the United States, causing a massive tsunami , which heads toward New York City . The wave leaves New York submerged in water and nearly all inhabitants of the city drown. This special effect sequence later inspired a scene in The Day After Tomorrow 2004 . The impressive effects were done by a team who later worked on the H. G. Wells scripted film Things to Come 1936 . For many years, Deluge was thought to be a lost film , but a print dubbed in Italian was found in a film archive in Italy in the late 1980s. Before the discovery, the only part of the film known to survive was the impressive footage of the tidal wave destroying New York City, which was used in the Republic Pictures serials Dick Tracy vs Crime Inc and King of the Rocket Men . Deluge Lake Trail is north of Interstate 70 in Vail, Colorado Vail . Deluge Lake Trail is six miles long to its destination of Deluge Lake. The Deluge Lake Trail rises from 8,600 feet at the trailhead to 9,210 feet within the first hour of hiking. Through dense stands of berries among the aspen, the trail ascends over Gore Creek Colorado Gore Creek . Here, serviceberry bushes, Amelanchier arborea, provide a bountiful food supply for bears attempting to gain weight before the onset of winter. Mountain gooseberry , Ribes inerme, also lines the trail as it winds among the aspen and ancient spruce . Higher, among the dense lodgepole pine s, hollygrape, Mahonia repens, provides a ground cover of darkening fruits. After four hours of climbing, the trail reaches a crest 3,172 feet above the trailhead and drops to the lakeshore at 11,690 feet. Drifts of snow on the steep rocky slopes continue to melt into Deluge Lake throughout the summer season. Beside the icy water of the lake, the porcelain blooms of alpine primrose, Primula parryi , and stiff red topped stems of Kings crown, Clementsia rhodantha , brighten the shore. Peering southwest from the outlet of Deluge Lake, the summit of Red Benchmark, at 11,816 feet, is visible. The Great Deluge algorithm GD is a generic algorithm applied to Optimization mathematics optimization problems. It is similar in many ways to the hill climbing and simulated annealing algorithms. The name comes from the analogy that in a great deluge a person climbing a hill will try to move in any direction that does not get his her feet wet in the hope of finding a way up as the water level rises. In a typical implementation of the GD, the algorithm starts with a poor approximation, S , of the optimum solution. A numerical value called the badness is computed based on S and it measures how undesirable the initial approximation is. The higher the value of badness the more undesirable is the approximate solution. Another numerical value called the tolerance is calculated based on a number of factors, often including the initial badness. A new approximate solution S , called a neighbour of S , is calculated based on S . The badness of S , b , is computed and compared with the tolerance. If b is better than tolerance, then the algorithm is recursively restarted with S S , and tolerance decay tolerance where decay is a function that lowers the tolerance representing a rise in water levels . If b is worse than tolerance, a different neighbour S of S is chosen and the process repeated. If all the neighbours of S produce approximate solutions beyond tolerance , then the algorithm is terminated and S is put forward as the best approximate solution obtained.
