The airfield was known as 14 mile for its distance from Port Moresby, and also known as Laloki or Lakoki Drome for the river to the northwest of the airstrip. It was officially renamed Schwimmer Airfield on November 10, 1942, in honor of Charles Schwimmer, lost in P 39D 41 6956 intercepting Japanese aircraft over Port Moresby. History Schwimmer Airfield was built by the US Army in early 1942 with a single runway was 5,300 feet by 100 feet. Later, around October 1942, it was surfaced with marston matting. No revetments were built at the airfield, but taxiway and parking areas dispersed to the north of the runway in a semicircle. A graduate of the University of Michigan , Was fled his native Detroit for California , and found employment as the jazz music journalism critic for the now defunct Hearst Corporation Hearst daily, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner , where he forged friendships with Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis , and Mel Torm . With his childhood friend Don Was he went on to form Was Not Was , providing the lyrics and playing various instruments, primarily flute, keyboards and harmonica. Reviewed by The New York Times in 1980 as the funkier art funk band comparing them to Talking Heads , Was Not Was used members of Funkadelic , alongside jazz legends like trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and singer s Mel Torm ,and Ozzy Osbourne . They released five album s and enjoyed four Top 40 Top 10 single music singles worldwide. They continue to tour, their most recent album, Boo, being issued in 2008.
